#8 - Special: The Milgram Obedience Experiment
Manage episode 296793418 series 2947828
After World War 2, American psychologists set out to prove that Americans would never fall for Nazi crap the way Germans did. They set up a clever experiment where a volunteer would be asked to push a button delivering a fatal shock to his fellow man.
Their prediction? 0.01% of men would push the button.
The result? 65% of men did it.
This sent shockwaves through the field of psychology. In our first episode of a special series looking back at landmark experiments, we cover the Milgram obedience to authority experiment.
You'll learn:
- The conditions required for two thirds of people to become murderers
- How many people it takes to convince you what you're seeing isn't real
- Why more bystanders actually decreases the odds of anyone helping
- The factor that dropped obedience from 65% to 10%
