The Great American Pop Culture Quiz Show

In a special crossover episode, we rope Dan McCoy of The Flop House, his brother John McCoy of Sophomore Lit and their brother Rob McCoy for questions about the sort of things you would read in high school. We start off by finding out what the kids are getting at the Scholastic Book Fair, then blink in amazement at sequels to classic books that probably shouldn’t have them. It all leads to the lightning round, where our players go outside their comfort zones and finally establish trivia dominance over their brothers!

🐸 Neither of the books adapted in Ichabod and Mr. Toad were feature length, and the compilation of them (which ran 68 minutes) came out in 1949.

✈️ Victory Through Air Power, Disney’s 1943 propaganda movie, is unique in the Disney canon in a lot of ways, not least the use of limited animation.

🏝️ Daniel DeFoe wrote two sequels to Robinson Crusoe, one of which is a little-read book of moral and religious essays.

🥖 There have been a bunch of sequels and prequels to Les Miserables, including two different sequel novels called Cosette (1995 and 2001). The most intriguing is A Court of Miracles (2020) which is a loose retelling of both Les Miserables and The Jungle Book.

👸 There was also a Shirley Temple version of A Little Princess, but not until 1939.

🌅 The released film Dying of the Light was such a heavily edited version of Paul Shrader’s movie that he and the cast campaigned against its release. A version closer to his vision is available at a few museums, and via methods online.

🚀 Love and Rockets has been published almost continuously for more than 40 years.

🗑️ Art Spigelman may now be best known for the Holocaust drama Maus, but he did co-create the Garbage Pail Kids as well.
