If you have hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, etc.) or Hashimoto's thyroiditis and are looking to do everything to save your thyroid gland, then the Save My Thyroid podcast is for you! Dr. Eric Osansky DC, IFMCP is the host, as he personally was diagnosed with Graves' disease in 2008 and was able to get into remission taking a natural approach. He created this podcast to help others with hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto's save their thyroid and regain their health. If you have hyperthyroidism then pretty much all of the episodes will benefit you, and if you have Hashimoto's you'll benefit from most of the guest expert episodes, as well as some of the "solo" episodes. The reason there is more of a focus on hyperthyroidism is because all of the other thyroid-related podcasts focus mostly on hypothyroidism/Hashimoto's, and since Dr. Eric personally dealt with Graves' disease he wanted this podcast to focus more on hyperthyroidism, although it will still offer plenty of value to those with hypothyroidism/Hashimoto's. Dr. Eric Osansky lives in Matthews NC with his wife, 2 daughters, 3 cats, 2 dogs, and 3 guinea pigs! He has been a practitioner for 20+ years, and has focused on helping people with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions since 2009.

Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of our cells. They use oxygen to convert glucose to an energy-storing molecule called ATP, which plays a role in numerous functions involved in neurotransmission, muscle contraction, DNA and RNA synthesis, and more. With thyroid hormones playing a vital role in regulating energy production within the mitochondria, the relationship between thyroid health and mitochondrial function is critical to our well-being. Today I’m discussing the relationship between thyroid health and mitochondrial function and why balanced thyroid hormone levels are needed to maintain optimal mitochondrial function and overall health. In this episode, you’ll learn about: - The effects of oxidative stress on the mitochondria - How thyroid hormones stimulate energy production and mitochondrial formation - The connection between autoimmune conditions and mitochondrial dysfunction - How thyroid medications can impact mitochondrial health - The potential effects of beta blockers on mitochondrial function - Common factors that contribute to mitochondrial damage - Selenium's role in thyroid health and its protective effects on mitochondria As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! It can be challenging to navigate your thyroid healing journey outside of conventional medical recommendations. While there is definitely a time and place for medication, for many people it isn’t the only option and a natural approach may be more desirable. In today’s Save My Thyroid Audit, I’m talking to Paula, who was diagnosed with Graves’ disease and later fired by her endocrinologist when she chose to follow a natural treatment approach. Unfortunately, this is common for patients seeking alternative treatment options. In this episode, Paula and I discuss why she decided to try natural treatments, her experience with the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet and herbal supplements, the significant health improvements she’s seen so far, my recommendations for continued reduction of her symptoms, why individualized care is essential, addressing both physical and emotional aspects of thyroid health, and more. While this isn’t the same as my comprehensive consultations with patients, I’m confident you’ll find this conversation valuable. Like many people, I’ve added sea salt to my food for years. Although sea salt is often praised for its trace minerals, there are a number of concerns to think about when considering whether using sea salt would contribute positively to overall health. Today I’m exploring the three main concerns about sea salt and thyroid health and why I recommend it to most of my patients. In this episode, you’ll learn: - The trace minerals found in sea salt and their benefits. - Iodine's role and effects on thyroid health - The necessity of minerals from sea salt - The link between excess salt and autoimmune diseases - Implications of microplastics in sea salt - What research shows about microplastic contamination in sea salt - Weighing risks vs. benefits of consuming sea salt As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! “The Superwoman Syndrome runs deep for emotional eaters.” - Tricia Nelson Emotional eating is a complex issue that many people face where they’re using food as a coping mechanism to deal with stress, anxiety, or other emotional challenges. Unfortunately, using food to feel better or as a distraction never pays off and typically leads to a cycle of overeating, guilt, and further emotional distress, making it difficult to establish a healthy relationship with food. The key to starting to shift this pattern is to understand the underlying causes. The solution will not come through dieting but through a lifestyle shift and the development of healthier coping strategies. Today I’m excited to share my conversation with Emotional Eating Expert, Tricia Nelson. Tricia lost fifty pounds by identifying and healing the underlying causes of her emotional eating. She is a TEDx speaker, whose talk has garnered over 2 million views on YouTube and the author of the #1 bestselling book, Heal Your Hunger: 7 Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating Now. Tricia is the host of the popular podcast, The Heal Your Hunger Show, and has spent over thirty years researching the hidden causes of the addictive personality. In this conversation, Tricia and I discuss why people use food for emotional reasons, Tricia’s struggles with weight and emotional eating, the need to address underlying emotional issues, her strategies for making sustainable life changes, practical tips for managing emotional eating, and more. Though I typically prefer a natural treatment route, there are times when thyroid medication is the best option. That said, monitoring thyroid hormone levels is crucial to ensuring that the best treatment choices are made as you progress on your thyroid healing journey. In today’s Save My Thyroid Audit, I’m talking to Kim, someone who was experiencing hypothyroid symptoms and is likely dealing with Hashimoto’s. After her diagnosis, Kim was taking Armour Thyroid for 15 years, and she started noticing hyperthyroid symptoms. In this episode, Kim and I discuss her journey with various thyroid medications, how dietary changes have impacted her symptoms, the importance of comprehensive and ongoing testing, the role of stress in thyroid health, and more. Liver biochemical abnormalities are seen in 15-76% of patients with untreated thyrotoxicosis - that is, those not taking antithyroid medication. This liver dysfunction is typically related to direct injury to the liver, comorbid heart failure, and associated autoimmune conditions. The good news is that, in most cases, liver enzymes can return to normal without lasting damage to the liver. Today, I’m exploring what the research shows about liver dysfunction in those with hyperthyroidism. I’m talking about the relationship between untreated hyperthyroidism and liver enzyme abnormalities, potential causes, and the importance of monitoring liver function in hyperthyroid patients. In this episode, you’ll learn about: - Causes of liver dysfunction in those with hyperthyroidism - How antithyroid medications can affect liver enzymes - Specific liver enzymes impacted by untreated hyperthyroidism - The relationship between elevated alkaline phosphatase and bone density concerns - The correlation between heart failure and more severe liver dysfunction - Autoimmune conditions that can impact liver health As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode! “Standing in the flow of energy that the natural world offers is foundational to health.” - Dr. Catherine Clinton The chemical/mechanical model has produced such an incredible paradigm in health. Diet, lifestyle, supplementation, and functional medicine testing are a crucial part of many people’s paths to optimizing their health. At the same time, many of us are doing it all but hit roadblocks in recovery that require incorporating new tools and strategies, like those offered by quantum biology. Getting back into the context of the natural world through coherence, grounding, and sunlight is a free, accessible, and powerful approach that can make a profound difference to someone’s health. Today I’m excited to be joined by Dr. Caroline Clinton to explore the topic of quantum biology. Dr. Catherine is a licensed naturopathic physician who has spent over 16 years helping people overcome their health issues. She has learned how our quantum biological system is intimately and inseparably connected to the world around us and has seen the benefits for her own health and those of her patients. In this conversation, Dr. Catherine and I discuss her experiences with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Lyme disease, and ulcerative colitis, how she first learned about quantum biology's impact on health, the benefits of grounding, sunlight exposure, and coherence, the significant positive impact of aligning with natural elements to support healing and maintain health, and more. There’s no one best diet for any health condition but there are certain similarities across diets that are beneficial for those with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions. For my patients with Graves’ and Hashimoto’s, I typically recommend an AIP diet as a starting point, eventually reintroducing foods which don’t trigger a negative response. While many patients start there, some will choose to follow other diets that people with autoimmune conditions have found to be beneficial. “You need a healthy gut to have a healthy immune system.” If you have hyperthyroidism, whether it's Graves’ disease, toxic multinodular goiter, or even subclinical hyperthyroidism, then you might wonder what diet you should follow. While there’s no one-size-fits-all diet solution, there are some foundational pillars to keep in mind when determining the right nutrition strategy for you. In my latest book, The Hyperthyroid Healing Diet, I explored three different diets in detail, explaining what each involves and how you can start implementing the right one for you. Today, I’ll discuss how different types of foods and diet strategies impact those with hyperthyroidism and the role of diet in the thyroid healing journey. Enjoy the episode!
