Vicki Sokolik refuses to be an Ostrich. Her son brought to her attention the crisis of unhoused youth — youth unhoused, not living with a parent/guardian, and not in foster care — in America, and she has been fighting to support this vulnerable population every since. Most active in Tampa Bay, Florida, Vicki is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Starting Right, Now, which removes barriers for unaccompanied homeless youth to cultivate long-term well-being and self-sufficiency. She is also the author of the new book, “If You See Them: Young, Unhoused, and Alone in America.” Vicki Sokolik joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the many ways unhoused youth fall through the cracks in our society, how her organization helps them, and also how to build trust with people who could use your help. ×Nothing is ever set in stone. In life or at work. Keeping your expectations flexible helps you to prevent being stressed or disappointed when things don't go your way.
Each failure can be a chance to learn rather than a moment of disappointment.
Instead of focusing on what is going wrong in your workplace, try to begin your day with one thing you're grateful for.
Think of ways to bring yourself back to the present moment and stay grounded at work for the upcoming year.
As we move into holiday season, take some time to think about what this year was like, and what you want out of next year.
Our words impact ourselves. That's why choosing the right ones, matter.
Constant irritation at work can really affect us negatively. Instead, learn to reflect on the root of irritation and chart a path towards deeper acceptance.
When you feel as though the situation at work is unbearable, remember - it's all impermanent.
Sometimes, the need to disconnect comes at an inopportune time. Take the break anyways and give your mind and body a chance to recalibrate.
In light of everything that is happening in the world today, make sure you give yourself ample time and space to properly process and grieve.
When we believe that it will all get done, we move from a place of scarcity to a place of abundance. It's an important mindset that helps you to set yourself up for success.
Mistakes are not a permanent reflection of who you are, but rather, a way to understand how to get closer to being your best self.
We often have clear processes for when things go wrong at work. But what about when things go wrong within ourselves? These internal processes are super important when it comes to taking care of ourselves in moments of stress and frustration.
You are never fully in control of everything at work. Let go of the things and responsibilities that don't belong to you.
When things feel like they are slipping, take a moment to reflect and draw answers from deep within yourself.
Be hyperaware of your bandwidth and how you can re-center your health and happiness whenever you feel frustrated or burned out.
It can be easy to forget the goals and aspirations we had when starting a job as time goes on. Centering these goals daily can help us stay grounded and connected to that powerful sense of purpose.
Don't fall victim to too many late nights, that can lead to greater exhaustion and burnout.
Be better prepared for difficult moments by keeping an internal list of the activities that help you process your emotions and formulate an action plan.
It's easy to focus only on the things we're doing wrong. Instead, choose mindful self-reflection, where we begin from a place of compassion for ourselves.

As we move through our careers, we will continue to face work stress of different kinds and intensities. This is why we must continually look for new techniques, practices and perspectives that keep us grounded, balanced and joyful, even when things are difficult.
Sometimes, a barrier to us actually relaxing are the expectations we have around relaxing. We aren't always going to be perfectly calm, still and peaceful. Give yourself one tiny thing to focus on and find satisfaction in developing mindfulness rather than achieving your optimal state.
Fixating on failure often leads to a lot of internal pain. Instead, reframe failure as an opportunity to do things differently and grow.

Mindfulness Minute
Shift your perspective of change - from disruption to opportunity.
Don't get too attached to one single perspective - always leave room to explore others, if the need arises.
When we hyperfixate on the negative, it can be easy to spiral. Instead, learn to become aware when this process is happening, so you can take a step back and gently return to a more balanced perspective.

Mindfulness Minute
By being open to change, despite first impressions, we're more conducive to positive change and more accepting of negative change. Staying flexible in our perspectives is key.
By being mindful of our various patterns of giving and receiving at work, we can start to prioritize those that give more and reduce investment in those that give less, leading to greater satisfaction overall.
Observing and understanding the highs and lows you experience at work is key to mapping out your inner growth journey.
Reality is bigger than work. When we remember this, the struggles we face at work become less overwhelming and all-consuming.
