1 David Weir CBE - the mental health challenges from childhood of a 6 x Paralympic gold medal winner 40:00
David Weir is one of the Paralympic greats. He won six gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 games as well as an 8 times winner of the London Marathon. His ten Paralympic medals have come at a range of distances in his racing chair...from 200m to marathon. He talks about his career and some of the tough mental battles he's had and his suicidal thoughts. He's outspoken on the way he feels he was treated by the sports rulers at the last Paralympics. Through counselling he discovered he'd been depressed all of his life. He recalls crying as a young boy on a council estate because he wanted to be 'normal' and play football and ride a bike. He never addressed the issues until 2016 and he's now thankful he spoke out and believes he's in the best mental state he's ever been in. David retired after Rio in 2016 but he's back and hungry for action in Tokyo this summer. The "WeirWolf" has also developed a new way of coaching and set up the Weir Archer Academy to pass on knowledge, experience and enjoyment of sport to the next generation of disabled people. Thanks for listening. Iwan Thomas is one of the characters of athletics....with his distinct hair as flamboyant 400m runner and now as a TV and stadium presenter. There is so much to Iwan Thomas and he freely talks about all aspects of his life - from his days competing to his post-athletics life. He talks about how he lives his life, surrounding himself with good friends and good people. He won silver at the World Athletics Championships in the 4x400m relay but this was eventually upgraded to gold because two of the American team admitted to take performance enhancing drugs. Iwan feels he's never been properly recognised with the team. He was given a form of medal in a car park in Birmingham. It makes him sad that they've never had their moment in the limelight. There are lots of great stories; from an altercation in a Southampton nightclub to drinking free beers to help give a sample for a drugs test. Iwan had many battles with injury during his career, missing the Athens Olympics and Melbourne Commonwealth Games. He tells us how he struggled mentally to cope with with his physical injuries and shut himself away suffering depression. He went on to make a video with Prince Harry to help others with mental health issues. He also had a traumatic time soon after his little boy Teddy was born. Within hours of being born little Teddy was taken into intensive care with Strep B. For ten days it was incredibly serious. Iwan now does all he can to raise awareness of the condition. We'd love to hear from you if you have any comments or guest suggestions @trackandballpod @ellsbells89 @marathonchamp…

James Ellington is one of Britain's finest sprinters. In this chat he's relaxed and brutally honest. And he's got a story to tell! He fell in love with athletics as a toddlers watching on TV. But the real change happened when his mum grounded him for 6 months when he was 12 years old for getting in to trouble with the police. James joined the local athletics club at Crystal Palace and never looked back. He was national champion at 12 and went on to compete internationally. But it has been far from plain sailing. He wasn't funded - so auctioned himself on ebay to raise money to compete at the London Olympics. He was also only training 3 times a week and so didn't really understand the demands of a professional athlete. He's got firm views on racism, sexism and the class divide in his sport. James is an Olympian and British and European Champion. He's been a part of the sprint relay squads; and has his own views on why more medals haven't been won by GB in that event. Life changed dramatically in 2017 when he was seriously injured in a head-on crash at a training camp in Tenerife. Many thought this was career-ending. James is currently training in Dubai and hoping to make the Tokyo Games in 2021. And he gives insight into the technical training that takes place in the 100m to allow him to sprint as fast as he can. Thanks for listening! @trackandballpod @ellsbells89 @marathonchamp…
So what can we learn from Sir Chris Hoy, MBE? 11 times World Champion, 6 x Olympic Champion. The answer is.. so many things as you'll find out in this fascinating 45 minutes. We learn about his physical and mental approach to becoming a champion. He didn't believe he was world class until his mid-20's, so what changed? It's something that's led him to believe everyone has the chance to be amazing....find your passion and put in the hard work. A lot of hard work. Chris talks about the changes at British Cycling which shaped his later career. The help from sports psychologist Steve Peters, the marginal gains and the attention to detail, which included flying his mattress, duvet and pillows all over the world to his competitions. There's so much more too with great stories on how he learnt he'd got a knighthood, going through a car wash with bikes on his roof rack and life as a best-selling author....from novels to his book Be Amazing. He has a great take on recreational cycling and how the country should moved forward following the surge in the use of bikes during the pandemic. We'd love to hear from you with ideas for other guests @trackandballpod @marathonchamp @ellsbells89…

We loved chatting with Max Whitlock - a phenomenal gymnast with 5 Olympic medals, 2 of them gold. Max was hoping to add to his haul in Tokyo in 2020 but has now got 2021 in his sights. Here's a chance to hear about the mindset of a champion, how fatherhood has changed him and how he won two golds in under an hour in Rio. Max is the final guest in 2020 for Ellen White and Richard Whitehead. If you're reading this on the day of publication - Happy Christmas! We'd love you to subscribe to the podcast to get it automatically in your feed each week. And you can follow us @trackandballpod…
So here's double world Champion, Olympic medal winner and YouTube vlogger Tom Daley. And this is a fascinating listen. Everything from knitting to fatherhood, building a coaching team to what it takes to be the best in the world. There have been many ups and downs in life and his sporting career and Tom freely talks about them all. Tom was just 14 when he took part in his first Olympic Games. But his build-up to the London Games were highly pressurised and emotionally difficult, after his father died, aged just 40, in 2011. There's plenty to learn from his approach to elite sport and what's needed to become a champion. Track and Ball is presented by Paralympic Gold medal winner Richard Whitehead and England World Cup footballer Ellen White. We've episodes out once a week, including a monthly live edition.
