On this episode of The Motherhood Kit, Yamel and Katy Rey discuss the power of love and showing children love. Assuring kids they are cared for benefits their emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. Katy Rey is a mother, multi-business owner, event coordinator, podcast host and author. She is the co-founder of Humans First Coaching and Consulting and founder of the nonprofit, Fostering Hearts Florida. Katy is also the author of Uniquely Loved For Being You, a children’s book which encourages children in powerless situations to proudly be themselves.

We often get consumed by the demands of our daily lives, including our phone usage. By taking a moment to pause, adults can acknowledge and validate children's feelings, creating a safe space for open dialogue. When children feel safe and loved, they gain the confidence to engage in difficult conversations. This experience inspired Katy to write her first book, "Uniquely Loved For Being You" which contains illustrated affirmations empowering children of all ages to embrace their individuality. Developing this confidence positively influences their overall growth and enhances their ability to express themselves to others.

Signs That Your Child May Not Be Feeling The Love
Note that these signs, based on Katy's personal experience, indicate a deeper issue when her children become highly emotional, uncooperative, and exhibit disruptive behavior. Unlike adults, children struggle to suppress their emotions and continue with their day. Additionally, social withdrawal should not be mistaken for inherent shyness in a child; instead, it may signify a lack of love, empathy, or words of affirmation. Children often struggle to articulate their need for love and understanding, relying on adults to demonstrate the importance of love through confident and unique expressions in relationships with them, partners, friends, and family.
Tips To Make Room For Love

  1. Love Notes – Yamel is a big fan of leaving notes of affirmation for her kids to remind them how much she cares.
  2. Time – If just 10 minutes each day can be spared for some one-on-one time to chat, play a game, or go for a walk, the payout (especially for older kids) is long-lasting.
  3. Car-ride or after school chats – Yamel shares wonderful questions and topics to zest up the usual, “How was school today?” often brought up after school pick up. Remain curious about kids' lives.
  4. Love bombs – Not the toxic kind. The straightforward, ‘I love you, I’m so proud of you’ statements, notes, or text messages that leave no room for doubt.
