Mindfulness...

Mindfulness is one of those words that pops up a LOT these days. And it seems like something that we should be doing, right? Like somehow people who practice mindfulness are more evolved than those of us who don't. At least that's how I see them. So if you're someone who already practices mindfulness, just know that I already see you as being a better human than me :)

I see a lot out there about what mindfulness is and the steps you can take to be more mindful. But I often find that advice kind of fruitless. It feels like yet another thing that I have to do in my already busy day.

And it also just seems like something else I'm going to fail at because I will have forgotten all about it by this Thursday.

But, having said all of that, it also seems like a really good idea! So....

How in the world do you incorporate mindfulness into your life? And especially into your eating?

On this week's podcast, I have an amazing discussion with my friend and colleague Victoria Stith about mindfulness in general and how it relates to eating--AND IFS! Viki is a therapist and coach who's been practicing mindfulness herself for over 30 years now. And she incorporates mindfulness into her work with her clients.

I have to say, I was surprised at where our conversation went. I thought Viki would be giving us step-by-step instructions on how to be more mindful eaters. But she didn't, and I'm so glad.

Why? Because she talked about how mindful eating looks different for everyone and how there's no right or wrong way to do it. That really takes the pressure off, doesn't it? And she really got into the heart of what mindfulness is. Viki talked about how mindfulness is all about:

  • Self-compassion

  • Self-awareness

  • "Not betraying yourself to listen to some outside source," like a diet program

  • Taking care of your own suffering

Sounds a lot like IFS, doesn't it???

But if you're someone who wants some guidelines on how to become a more mindful eater (or just a more mindful person in general), no worries! Viki gives some great advice, and we do a mindful eating exercise during the podcast.

I absolutely loved talking to Viki, and her message about self-compassion is something that I think we can all benefit from. Take a listen!
