Vicki Sokolik refuses to be an Ostrich. Her son brought to her attention the crisis of unhoused youth — youth unhoused, not living with a parent/guardian, and not in foster care — in America, and she has been fighting to support this vulnerable population every since. Most active in Tampa Bay, Florida, Vicki is the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Starting Right, Now, which removes barriers for unaccompanied homeless youth to cultivate long-term well-being and self-sufficiency. She is also the author of the new book, “If You See Them: Young, Unhoused, and Alone in America.” Vicki Sokolik joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the many ways unhoused youth fall through the cracks in our society, how her organization helps them, and also how to build trust with people who could use your help. Gut Brain Connection: Episode 3 Show Notes Understanding the reason behind the podcast Connections between the gut and our brain…meaning what you eat matters when it comes to your overall health and mental health Body Keeps Score-Conference Gut- gateway to excellent health Microbiome-bacterial in our gut…good and bad bacteria What can cause a leaky gut? 1. Antibiotic use 2. Increased pesticides in our foods-GMO foods, non-organic or conventional foods are heavily sprayed with pesticides Environmental Working Group (clean 15 and dirty 12) 3. Added stress-more to come in future episodes on this. 4. Birth history- c-section vs vaginal If you had a c-section, you can increase your babies immune system by breast feeding. If you are unable to breastfeed, make sure you give your baby probiotics 5. Heartburn medications-change the acidity of your stomach and can kill off good bacteria and add bad bacteria. Blood Brain Barrier-the gate for toxins/chemicals in our blood stream that we do not want to reach our central nervous system to affect our brain. When the gut is leaky, the is a breech in the lining of your stomach that allows things to cross into your BBB. When this happens, we have chemicals in our brain that should not be there. How to notice if you have leaky gut: Gas, bloating, anxiety, autoimmune disease, skin issues, brain fog, fatigue, depression, constantly sick, allergies/asthma, food sensitivities, etc. When you have had trauma, there are many physical symptoms that can occur. The brain is telling the body that there is something wrong. Physical symptoms are an indication of something wrong. Listen to your body. How do we heal? Work on the gut first. Where do you start? Food journal. Write down everything that you consume in a day. How did you feel? Elimination diet-take out specific foods for 3 weeks at a time Gluten, dairy, soy, corn, and eggs. If you have a sensitivity to foods you may not notice. Your body may think its normal. May present itself as bloating, or gas, or slight discomfort. When re-introducing foods, do it one food item at a time. If you feel better without the food, leave it out of your diet. If you feel ok when you eat the food again, keep it in your diet. A diet is individual. There is no diet for everyone out there. Food and behavior are connected. Monitor the food that you are eating and how that is making you feel. You can do the same things for your children. Introduce new fruits and vegetable with kids that are older and use to eating a certain way. The same goes for adults, introduce new foods into your diet as you are eating to fuel your body. Get your kids involved in the cooking process. Allow them to help you prep/make the meal so they feel involved in the process. This will help them feel like they are part of the process of creating something. They will try more things if they feel a part of the process. Safe supplements are hard to come by. When you buy supplements over the counter at the pharmacy they are not tested for purity/quality.
