Summary. The episode, recorded on June 16 20022, is an important discussion. It is about Australia evolving into a regional or even global clean energy leader from being a laggard. The Australian energy market may be small by Asian standards, but it has a leading global place in the energy markets. Innovation, ample capital, and a new clean energy-friendly government is going to change things quite a bit. The show’s guest is one of the region’s prominent thought leaders, Tim Buckley who heads the Australia-based think tank Climate Energy Finance. We first ask Tim about his journey to becoming an active participant in Asia’s decarbonisation. Then we evaluate the current state of clean energy in Australia and have a very honest discussion on the opportunities and challenges in the sector. Finally, Tim offers some thoughts about the shape of thing to come over the next 28 years. I should add that we recorded this interview right in the middle of one of Australia’s most serious energy crises historically. (Please note all opinions are personal and do not reflect those of present or past employers.)
About Tim. Tim Buckley is the Director of Climate Energy Finance, Australasia. Tim has 30 years financial markets experience, including providing public interest related financial analysis in the seaborne coal and electricity sectors since 2013, studying energy efficiency and renewables across China and India, and the resulting stranded asset risks in Australia. Tim has founded Climate Energy Finance Australasia in 2022, having worked with the global thinktank IEEFA over 2013-2021. Tim was co-founder of a start-up global listed clean energy equities fund with Westpac as a cornerstone investor. From 1998 to 2007 Tim was a Managing Director at Citigroup, Head of Australasian Equity Research, and worked at Macquarie Group in Australia then Deutsche Bank in Singapore. Tim has published over 100 reports on the global energy transition.
