According to ancient Greek mythology, Titan Cronus was the father of time. He used to eat his children, the last one Zeus released his sisters and brothers, they became the Olympian Gods and managed to overthrow their father during the war of Titanomachy.
The brothers drew a lot, Zeus became lord of the sky, Poseidon became lord of the seas and Hades became the lord of the underworld. Immortals cannot die, for them to go to the underworld means death, that's why we say Hades died.
