More people are learning about things like compersion, intimate friendships, and open and honest communication. Many of the tools and skills that people learn to hone while engaging in polyamory carry over into other aspects of life not remotely related to romance and sex. However, people still tend to ignore the full implications of the ethical part of non-monogamy, and so mainstream relationships simply end up being monogamy + (however many additional partners) - meaning they end up replicating the same harmful or abusive status quo that queer people have to actively fight just to live.
