A fascinating and enriching conversation with Professor Ibrahim Al-Marashi. He uses the power of storytelling to teach and as a channel to express his point of view. He inspired us with his genuine desire and passion for teaching and giving voice to what matters most to him, which interests derive from his background, but also his innate curiosity, discovering different cultures and ways of seeing the world while traveling to more than 57 countries.
Because creativity for him is, this divine power inside of us, something that we can not explain, it is a gift that required to be exposed to different perspectives. While curiosity is one of his value and what drives his journey.
In September 2002 he published an article for the journal, The Middle East Review of International Affairs. In February 2003, entire sections of that article were copied and pasted into a dossier that was used by the British government to justify the war against Iraq. His involvement in the affair sparked his interest in political communication and the power of narrative.
Ibrahim is Associate Professor of Middle East history at California State University San Marcos and visiting professor at the IE University School of Global and Public Affairs in Madrid, Spain. He obtained his doctorate in Modern History at University of Oxford, completing a thesis on the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. His research focuses on 20th century Iraqi history, and currently is focusing on the effects of climate change on the nation. He is co-author of Iraq’s Armed Forces: An Analytical History (Routledge, 2008), and The Modern History of Iraq, with Phebe Marr (Routledge 2017), and A Concise History of the Middle East (Routledge, 2018).
