This episode of Delta Voices: Artists of the Mid-South is a conversation with Jackson, Miss. based artist Alexis McGrigg,
Join Alexis McGrigg and former Andrew W. Mellon Post-Baccalaureate Curatorial Fellow at the Mississippi Museum of Art Christina McField for a discussion of McGrigg's challenges with working in the South, gaining exposure in a rural state, and the impact of community on her practice. This deep dive exploration of McGrigg's creative career expands on her ability to thrive in a small town.
Working in painting, drawing, photography, video, installation and performance, Alexis McGrigg investigates themes of Blackness, spirituality and space. Her recent series of paintings depicts a metaphysical plane she’s dubbed “the Ether”—a zone between the realm of the living and the domain where souls reside. Her work—made by dripping dyes on a canvas or paper—visually manifests this in-between space. McGrigg works intuitively, pouring dye in a circular motion, building layers of splatters, streaks and drips in a palette of violets and indigos. This serpentine movement of dye around the edges of the composition leaves a central area where the color of the substrate shows through. The result is heavenly, reminiscent of the nighttime sky, with an ambiguous form glowing in the middle of the picture plan.
A short video documentary and article featuring the artist and their work is also available online. To find those, and to see more episodes and artists featured on Delta Voices, visit arkmfa.org.
