This episode of Delta Voices: Artists of the Mid-South, Justin Tyler Bryant, a drawer, painter and social practice artist living in Little Rock, Arkansas in conversation with Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts Associate Curator Theresa Bembnister.
Bryant's work investigates historical and contemporary imagery of African Americans. His most recent project, Holman: A Living Archive, documents a former high school attended by Black students during decades of segregated education in the artist’s hometown of Stuttgart, Arkansas. The building ceased operations as a high school in 1970, and Bryant attended Head Start preschool there in the 1990s.
In their conversation, Bryant discusses his affinity for works on paper, the importance of observation in drawing, and how the archives of African Americans have long been ignored by institutions. He also discusses the importance that he places on Holman School, and his desire to create a better archive of the people who attended.
A short video documentary and article featuring the artist and their work is also available online. To find those, and to see more episodes and artists featured on Delta Voices, visit arkmfa.org.

Delta Voices: Artists of the Mid-South highlights artists working in the Mid-South. Each episode, we ask museum curators in our region about the artists in their communities that they’re most interested in and excited about, and capture the artist in conversation about art, place, identity and community.
Delta Voices features a deeper engagement with the art, craft, and inspiration of featured artists through short videos, conversation between artists and curators, and more. Delta Voices: Artists of the Mid-South’s presenting sponsor is Bank OZK. Additional support is provided by Friday, Eldredge & Clark, LLP; Judy C Thompson Trust; Barbara House; and the Andre Simon Memorial Trust Fund in memory of everyone who has died of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
