We are living in an increasingly digital world where nearly everything we do generates data. This information can be used to come to profound and impactful decisions that create tremendous benefits—but only if we can interpret, understand and put the insights to use.

The trouble is that although many of us are data-aware, we're far from data-literate. And for the data-driven world of today, and the data-saturated world of the future, our next guest says that's not good enough. Institutions have a responsibility to ensure all students develop data fluency, something that starts with closing digital divides.

Vice Chancellor of Technology and Data and Chief Digital Officer at UC Irvine, Tom Andriola joins Dr. Cristi Ford on this episode of Teach & Learn.

Together, they discuss:

· what it means to be truly data-literate

· why data is the currency of the future

· how to institutional leaders, staff and faculty can boost their data-literacy

· the role of AI in data

· closing the digital divide

· UC Irvine’s school-wide LLM, ZotGPT

According to a U.S. News + Generation Lab report , 70% of college students have struggled with mental health since starting college. Despite expressing a need for care, only 37% of survey respondents searched for mental health resources. These findings align with a recent D2L-sponsored Tyton Partners report , which found that only 50% of students are aware of key on-campus services like academic and career advising, financial aid, and mental health counseling. It's clear we’re edging closer and closer towards a student mental health crisis in the higher education world. To discuss why this is happening and offer solutions, Dr. Cristi Ford, D2L’s Chief Learning Officer, welcomed Dr. Amelia Parnell, President of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA). In this episode, they discuss: The D2L and Tyton Partners ' Listening to Learners Report ', which highlights the impact of student safety on re-enrollment decisions Why academic advisors play a pivotal role in creating safe spaces and supporting students beyond academic guidance Why so many students are unaware of available mental health resources How technology can enhance the delivery and accessibility of support services The importance of continuous collaboration between student affairs departments and academic affairs departments to support student success Remember to follow us on social media. If "all the world's a stage," as Shakespeare believed, then hope should be cast as the lead, argues Dr. Jessica Riddell of Hope Circuits Institute. Riddell contends that hope can transform higher education into spaces where humans can truly flourish. Drawing inspiration from the theater, she introduces a novel approach to integrating hope into systems that are beloved, resilient and broken. Join Dr. Riddell and host Dr. Emma Zone as they explore how hope can be actioned to rewire universities and how with hope as the leading character, we can change the narrative of broken systems and our responses to them. In this episode they touch on: the role of hope in higher ed institutions the power of critical hope in the face of broken systems why the default response to a crisis needs to be rethought the need to reevaluate your default response to crisis how a system can be broken and loved at the same time conceptual tools that support divergent thinking Remember to follow us on social media. When the goal is a university degree or diploma from a private institution, learners can bank on a long road ahead. In some cases, the path traveled is straightforward; in other cases, it’s winding with more than a few detours, U-turns and full stops. While different, what these pathways have in common, is the destination. But, what about low-income learners or those from under-served communities who are less likely to consider pursuing higher education from a private university? What can institutions do to create pathways that reduce undermatching? Should private universities have a responsibility to the public good and uplift communities outside their matriculated, tuition-paying student body? In this episode of Teach & Learn, we reimage traditional pathways to create viable routes for learners from all walks of life, with Vice Provost for Digital Education at Stanford, Matthew Rascoff . Together, he and podcast host Dr. Cristi Ford talk about: how online, and hybrid modalities create new pathways why private universities need to consider the public good the impact of taking action to curb undermatching what kinds of partnerships are valuable in these efforts Remember to follow us on social media. As the debate over whether a post-secondary degree is worth it rages on , higher ed institutions are seeking solutions that can help them attract and retain new students. Enter data-driven decision making. When done properly, a well-executed data and analytics strategy can positively impact both student and institutional success. Universities and colleges that can properly harness and analyze their data to gain insights into the needs of students and faculty will have a competitive edge over those that don’t. But knowing this and executing on it are two different things. That’s why we were so pleased to welcome Dr. Anissa Vega, Associate Vice Provost, from Kennesaw State University (KSU). The team at KSU successfully implemented uHoo Analytics, an analytics platform that fosters data-driven decision making. uHoo pulls data from the D2L Brightspace to provide faculty with real-time time insights on student performance and engagement. In this episode, Dr. Cristi Ford sits down with Dr. Anissa Vega to discuss: the main challenges KSU faculty were facing that led to the development of uHoo the importance of making things easy for faculty how the KSU team designed dashboards that offered course improvement insights the secret ingredient that drove high faculty adoption numbers lessons learned from building and implementing at scale Remember to follow us on social media. What if you were asked to incorporate climate action into your existing curriculum? Would you respond with: “I’m not a climate scientist,” and follow up with “what does climate have to do with what I teach?” It may sound odd, but whether you teach calculus, drama, or beginner Spanish, our podcast guest says ALL courses are climate courses—period. Many of us experience feelings of anxiety or hopelessness when we hear the words "climate crisis." Knowing that the best way to stave off despair is through action, Karen Costa got to work. She created Climate Action Pedagogy (CAP) and with it, she wants educators to weave climate education into their classes, no climate science degree necessary. There’s no telling what the cumulative beneficial environmental and mental health impacts would be if students were empowered to address the climate crisis. In this episode, Dr. Emma Zone sits down with author, adjunct faculty, faculty development facilitator and the creator of CAP, Karen Costa to discuss: the link between mental health and climate action education how all courses are climate courses how action is the antidote to despair the connection between neurodivergent students and climate action leadership how to weave climate action into your course To learn more about Karen Costa and the work she does, visit ClimateActionPedagogy.com , order a copy of her book 99 Tips for Creating Simple and Sustainable Educational Videos: A Guide for Online Teachers and Flipped Classes, and watch for the upcoming publication of Open Minds: Designing and Teaching for ADHD Students' Success. This is how a typical work life unfolds: we get an education, then a job and after 40 years or so at that job, we retire. But experts say, that won’t work in the future. (Pardon the pun). People are living longer, healthier lives. Now, before you start planning an extra, extra-long retirement, consider that the longer you live, the longer you’ll need to stay in the workforce. And the more important life-long learning will become. People will need to be able to work while gaining the competencies and skills required for jobs that don’t exist yet. But how can we make education and work, work with minimal disruption? How can we plan for a work life that will span nearly a century? What can we make our careers future-proof? Our next guest says we need to create systems today that can better support us in the future. Teach & Learn host Dr. Cristi Ford and guest Dr. Michelle Weise unpack what a longer life means for the future of work and life-long learning. In this episode they touch on: What the future of work might look like What systems need to be designed to enable future workers to upskill with minimal disruption Who should pay in time and money to educate the workforce: The employer or the individual? Student identity is crucial in K-12 public schools, but it’s not always given the attention it deserves. When students feel a sense of belonging and see their identities reflected in the spaces and curriculum around them, they thrive. This can have positive trickle-down effects on well-being and academic engagement. In this episode of the Teach & Learn podcast, Dr. Emma Zone talks to Sharonda Willingham, Principal at Seattle’s Interagency Academy. They discuss the importance of student identity, how the Interagency Academy serves as an intervention for students who aren’t being served by traditional school, the role of technology in providing access and flexibility for students and why educators must understand and embrace AI technology to prepare students for the future. We have a collective responsibility and an obligation to work toward making education equitable for all learners period. Wouldn’t this world be a better place if anyone who desires to learn, regardless of gender, religion, race, location, socioeconomics, and the like, could access high-quality education? Of course. What if the words ‘opportunity’ and ‘divide’ never had to be paired together? We’d all be better for it. While we can strive to make things better on a global scale, there are actionable steps we can take to make our classrooms more equitable today. In this episode of the Teach and Learn podcast, Dr. Emma Zone shares the virtual classroom with Daysha Jackson-Sanchez , the VP of Equity Solutions at Lumen Learning . Together, they talk about how to identify and eliminate systemic barriers in education to make learning more equitable for all learners. In this episode of Teach & Learn, Daysha Jackson-Sanchez provides insights on: How equity translates into greater individual student success and its ripple effect What we can do to bridge the opportunity divide What to consider when thinking about equity What we can do to even the playing field today For more information on equitable and inclusive education, please check out what Daysha has written on the topic: Enhancing Inclusivity Through Pedagogical Partnerships: Valuing Students' Diverse Experiences The Key to Generating More Equitable Results in Higher Education?
