199: Can blockchain technology change the world?
Manage episode 322761115 series 2180111
There is so much (and this seems common unfortunately) going on in the world right now that can make us feel overwhelmed.
I’ve been in many conversations with people asking ‘is there any hope of changing these systems’ and while all I have is my own opinion, I believe decentralization (which is KEY) and blockchain technology has the power to change the world.
I recently got back from ETHdenver, which is a conference dedicated to ecosystem of blockchain technologies that align with the values of ethereum (decentralized, open sourced, community oriented, giving power back to everyday people, creating systems not limited by geopolitical location, gender, race, age, work status, social economic status, even langage).
I listened to people speaking about reforestation efforts that utilize blockchain technology to cut through all the bureaucracy allowing them to plant trees 100x, sometimes 1000x faster than current systems.
I learnt about efforts to restistbute wealth and create basic income for people outside of government programs, and relying on grants and taxing people.
I learnt about programs designed to help connect with people in places like Sierra Leone who don’t even have bank accounts because they don’t have birth certificates and other official documents needed to open them. These programs will hire, train and fund real people who live there and are a part of these communities to help them access not only (non centralized) banking for themselves and their communities, but give them job training and pay them base wages of $75USD+/hour and more to do so.
I learnt about decentralized science, and how gated research and data often leads to slow and costly cures for diseases, innovation for climate change, and more. How blockchain technology can allow for us to open up information for people across the globe to work collaboratively, while still giving credit where it's due, to help us solve global and localized issues faster.
These are just some of the things I learnt, and doesn’t even begin to touch on the amazing people I met.
I dive more into some of these initiatives on this week's podcast episode which you can find here.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out.
I’ll be diving deeper and deeper into this space personally, as I believe it’s so much more than ‘crypto and money’ and genuinely feel that if the right people enter this space, it will radically change the world in equal ways, that can create wealth that doesn’t involve human exploitation, and doesn’t rely on governments or corporations.
I was a part of a team (Blu3_DAO - on IG and twitter) that pitched a project that received $1 million in funding that is geared towards this vision of wealth equality, and creating a better future together. With that said, if you’re ever interested in diving into this space more yourself, my inbox is always open.
The world is heavy, but I still believe in it, because people like you, my friend , exist in it. Good people, who believe in community over competition, who want to leave this world a better place than they found it.
You’re doing so much for the world, simply by being here. Thank you!
Until next week,
Lana
