×It’s an exciting thought to have a friend serve alongside you. Ministry is challenging, but it also can be fun, especially if we enjoy the people with whom we work. But hiring a friend does not often end well. In fact, we hear from pastors regularly about the downside of hiring a friend. In this episode, Thom and Sam look at the causes of this failure. It can work, but it’s rare. The relationship has been redefined. Most leaders do not vet friends well for their new role. The friend often expects concessions because of the relationship. You don’t really know someone until you work together. P. S. The friendship often ends. Resources: Filament Bible Collection Tyndale House Publishers Upward Sports FREE Research Report! Churches are not typically early adopters of technology. Boyd Pelley from Church Teams joins Josh and Sam to discuss why churches should embrace new technology sooner. The co-hosts talk about how pastors can become more proficient in the technology space. Why do churches lag behind with technology? How does Churchteams balance being cutting edge as a company with the reality of late-adopting churches? What are the biggest hurdles for churches when adopting new technology? How can pastors lead low-tech churches to do more with technology? What excites you the most about the future of AI and other big-data resources? Does your church have clear expectations of church leaders? What positions are considered leadership positions in the church? What areas are your leaders held accountable? Thom and Sam discuss this important but often neglected issue in churches. With increasing authority in the church comes an increasing expectation of accountability. Attendance accountability. Stewardship accountability. Moral example accountability. Unity accountability. Josh and Sam must deal with the reality of being both pastors and dads. We’ve all heard horror stories about pastors’ kids. Are they true? Are pastors’ kids different now than in the past? The co-hosts give their take on the current environment of raising children while also leading a church. There are far fewer young families in ministry. The average age of a pastor is 60. There are far more dual-income families in ministry now, so the traditional pastor’s wife role is less common. The fishbowl still exists, but the pressure to conform to preconceived standards is less intense. At the same time, there are far more eyeballs on the pastor’s kids because of social media. Given the biblical mandate to pastors concerning the management of their homes, should pastor’s kids be held to a higher standard? If so, to what degree? Typically, the first step in making necessary changes is acceptance of the current reality. A church cannot change unless its members and leaders know that the status quo will lead to death. Sam and Thom review five situations where dying churches get stuck and, as a consequence, continue on the path toward death. Serving a church is not a 9-to-5 kind of job. Ministry comes with odd hours. Josh and Sam discuss their typical workweek and how they keep a rhythm going. Very few pastors work less than 40 hours per week, but how do they allocate those hours? One study a few years ago revealed 84% of pastors work 40 or more hours per week on average. Additionally, 35% of pastors are working 60 or more hours every week. How do some of these hours break down? Two studies give us some ideas. 15-20 hours in sermon preparation 10-20 hours in pastoral care (e.g., counseling, weddings, hospital visits) 8 hours of custodial duties (e.g., opening facilities, cleaning) 5 hours in prayer 5 hours of evangelism (in growing churches), none for non-growing churches 4 hours in meetings 3 hours in electronic communication (e.g., email) Resources: The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Churchteams FREE Research Report! Are we entering a new era in American religion? Current data shows we are at an inflection point. Over the last 30 to 40 years, the share of Americans who had no religious affiliation has dramatically increased. That period is over, and something new is on the horizon. Ryan Burge joins the show to discuss what this new era in American religion may look like in the next ten years. After a 30-year increase, the share of non-religious people actually dropped from 28.4% in 2021 to just 26.8% in 2022. The generational difference in the religiosity between Millennials and Gen Z is incredibly small. That wasn’t true ten years ago, twenty years ago, or thirty years ago between previous generations. Religion is not fading anymore in the United States. For now, it’s holding steady. Evangelizing a rapidly secular society requires a different approach than one in which religion has experienced a period of relative stasis. You can check out our premium content on this subject for a deeper dive. Abuse originates in how victimizers view others. At some level, they believe that other people exist to fulfill their desires. Pastors who take advantage of others place themselves at the center and try to control the orbits of vulnerable people around them. Victimizers are not necessarily brash or overpowering. They may be sensitive, subdued, and even charming. Many abusive pastors have likable personalities. So what are some warning signs to watch for? Josh and Sam discuss this difficult topic. Entitlement: “I deserve your attention.” Superiority: “I am always right.” Duplicity: “I do not need to follow the rules.” Justification: “My anger is warranted.” Manipulation: “Your questions attack me.” Resources: The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Churchteams “Make My Church Safe” by Sam Rainer Safe Church Training FREE Research Report! In your 30s and 40s, you start to learn what you don’t know. The older you get, you either become more self-aware or stop caring. Josh and Sam talk about what they still haven’t figured out after twenty years of ministry in the church. Balancing being a “boss” and being a “pastor.” Balancing work, family, and church is a never-ending tug-of-war. Creeping cynicism is constantly a struggle. The temptation to cruise is always there. This time of year, many commentators and researchers prognosticate about the future of the church. Thom and Sam take a different approach in this episode. While many of their predictions from previous decades have turned out to be correct, not all of them did. They look back and evaluate a few predictions they got wrong from years ago. Sunday school would not survive the turn of the Millennium (Thom in the early 1990s). Multi-ethnic churches would become the fastest-growing (Sam in the early 2010s). The multi-site administrator would become an important church staff position (Sam in 2010). Evangelism will return to its rightful place of importance and priority (Thom in the mid-2010s). A recession will negatively impact church giving (Sam and Thom during the pandemic). The holiday season can be stressful for pastors. The sprint to year-end can exhaust even the most seasoned church staff. Thom and Sam discuss ways to enjoy this busy time of year. Start a family tradition on the “off days” of Christmas, especially the week after Christmas Day. Don’t fight the inevitable church calendar or set false expectations with your family. Better to delay family time than cram it between church activities. Grumpiness confuses your congregation and becomes contagious with your family. Pick a couple of days for your family and ignore your phone notifications. Ask your spouse about doing something special together shortly after Christmas.
