On Friday, March 5, Third Floor Views discussed the importance of diversity in children’s literature. We spoke to two local women who have started companies to deliver diverse books to kids, and offered suggestions on how to diversify your children’s at-home library.

Bunmi Emenanjo, founder of Atlas Book Club.
Atlas Book Club aims to expose children to different cultures and introduce them to world history, which helps them learn about the world and the concepts of empathy and cultural diversity. Emenanjo created Atlas in 2016 “with the goal of ensuring my Nigerian-American kids continue to develop their knowledge of their African heritage.”
What started, she says “as a family book club focused on African countries grew into an exploration of different cultures and countries from around the world.”
Ceece Kelley founder of Soaring Kite Books
Ceece Kelley founded her independent book publishing company in the spring of 2020. After having her son, Ceece felt compelled to introduce him to a variety of children’s books including timeless classics, empowering current releases, and books with characters that look just like him.
