He has been teaching university courses on humor since 1983, and has published six books and over seventy articles on humor. In 2000 an international conference was held in Amsterdam based on his book Humor Works. Since 1988 he has been on the Editorial Board of Humor: The International Journal of Humor Research. He is Honorary President of the International Association for the Philosophy of Humor. In 2004 and 2005 he was elected President of the International Society for Humor Studies. Under the name Humorworks, Dr. Morreall has addressed over 600 business and professional groups in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan. His work has been featured in the New York Times (four times), the Washington Post, Asahi Shimbun, the Manchester Guardian, Forbes, and the Economist.
