Hungarian Peter Pal Kiss discusses how he fought back from Guillain-Barré Syndrome to become a world champion on the water aged just 16.
Taken ill aged eight and having spent much of his childhood in hospital, Kiss emerged from the uncertainty of where his life would go to find Para canoe, the home of his achievements. "I am very happy that I found this sport - I almost feel like this sport was made for me. I immediately fell in love with canoeing and from then on I never stopped. I've always loved sports but I felt like I finally found myself and who I am because of canoeing."
The now 17-year-old has been allowed to find himself through sport, but one thing he has also found within his mindset is an incredible resilience, aided by his support bubble. "I would say (my resilience) comes from everyone because I received a lot of positive feedback and support which has motivated me to never give up - which crossed my mind a few times. But my message is: never give up. Maybe right now things aren’t looking bright and promising and you think you are going through hell, but trust me, things will always get better in time."
Kiss also discusses his early days of competing, hopes for the future and why he’s hoping to be seeing double after Tokyo.
Learning topics for this episode include resilience, mental health, the importance of family, defiance and self-acceptance.
