×The crew is back together for a new episode about that old nemesis of youth pastors everywhere: Travel Sports! Shannon is just entering the Sports Parent Phase. Steve is a few years removed from it. Brock is smack in the middle of a softball apocalypse. Travel sports (and other high demand activities in our kid-centric world) are not going anywhere soon. How do we connect, speak about, shepherd, encourage, coach and even challenge parents and kids to think about sports in relationship to youth ministry and spiritual growth? Do we give up, give in, give them heck, or find a way to come alongside them in the midst of their busy and frantic pursuit of the elusive golden scholarship? By the way, we recorded this late in 2024, shortly after Shannon’s church nearly burned in a wildfire. Since then, things have gotten worse in Malibu and other areas near LA. If you want to know how to help, email us at youthministrysherpas@gmail.com and we will connect you with a local ministry that could use your help. Happy New Year from the Youth Ministry Sherpas! Shannon is out with a sick kid, but Brock and Steve got together anyway to look back on 2024. What a time to be alive! Literally. I mean, Brock had a freaking heart attack last year! That rattles the emotions and priorities in one’s life, for sure. We are both grateful to be given another year of friendship and calling in youth ministry. Which brings us to 2025. What’s next for the church? What changes do we predict, prophecy and prognosticate coming down the pike for youth ministry this year? Our answers might surprise you. They are guaranteed to make you think. And hey, if we’re wrong, just stone us. It’s our first show of 2025. We are glad you are with us, and we hereby resolve to be more consistent this year! Give us a 5-star review on iTunes. The election is finally over. Not only are we glad to no longer be receiving political spam texts, but we are also glad to never have to talk about politics ever again, right? Well, we know that’s not true. Which is why we are back to beat the dead horse into submission. In this episode, Shannon and Steve talk about how to help students think beyond our own cultural time to what God is doing around the world. If the story of the world is the story of Jesus and his church, it’s our responsibility to elevate our thinking beyond American politics and disciple our students towards a better and bigger perspective. It’s challenging, convicting, nuanced, and might even get us into a little trouble. But hey, if that happens, we can just blame Brock for not being here to help us. Give us a 5-star review on iTunes. They say clarity comes in crisis. That seemed to prove true when our own Brock Morgan recently suffered a heart attack. At that moment, the things that matter most came clearly to mind, and it’s not surprising that, in addition to his wife and daughter, the students he cares about were among the thoughts racing through his mind. In this deeply personal and meaningful conversation, Brock shares his story of the heart attack and the impact this experience has had on him. For Shannon and Steve, it was a reminder of what’s really important in ministry (people) and how grateful we are for the chance to live into the calling God has given us. Plus, we were all grateful for the chance to record this episode at all. Give us a 5-star review on iTunes. Episode 23: Disruptive Youth Ministry It's our first full-length episode in a while (dang day jobs), but we are back for a fun and fascinating conversation about the subversive role youth pastors can play in the lives of young people. In a time when it feels like the church is seeking certainty, status quo, and black and white answers, youth pastors can play the role of disruptors. By stirring the pot, asking hard questions, being vulnerable with our own doubts and thoughts -- we can move a generation of young people towards a more robust, fresh, vibrant faith that will outlast the times and provide genuine hope for a lifetime of following Jesus. Students are not looking for easy answers; they are looking for real faith. Youth ministry as agitation and disruption? Maybe that's why the three of us love it so much. Youth Ministry Sherpas: Coast To Coast
It’s already June, and Brock, Shannon and Steve finally managed to get together to record our final episode of the spring season. The last few months have been tough for all of us, with plenty of personal and ministry things to deal with. That has left us all feeling pretty tired, burned out, and cynical. Let’s just say, we aren’t exactly “killing it!” these days. That’s reality. Ministry is hard. There are times when we lack the optimism and heart we need to do it well. When those times hit, it’s good to have friends to debrief with instead of just Instagram to compare ourselves to. Whether you are on top of the world or feeling like you’ve been in the desert for 40 days, we hope our vulnerable conversation gives you the same encouragement and hope it gave to us. It’s Move Up Season in youth ministry. There are new families moving their oldest child into a youth group for the first time. There are freshmen moving into high school. And of course, seniors graduating to the next thing, whatever that may be. For youth pastors, navigating these changes is a big challenge. We have to communicate well, help people feel comfortable in their new setting, ensure nobody gets lost in the shuffle, and handle the calendar, often in a compressed period of time. All that, while dealing with our own emotions of seeing beloved students graduate. It can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Multiply that by a billion if your own kids are graduating. Steve has lived it three times! (Yes, Shannon, someday that will be you!) Transitions and Move Ups are truly madness, but it’s an important part of shepherding people and taking good care of your ministry. We hope this episode is helpful, even if we don’t have all the answers.…

1:02:27Today the Sherpas welcome good friend and Download Youth Ministry Co-founder Josh Griffin to the podcast! We talk with Josh about his unforeseen call to youth ministry as a college student, and his discouraging first job at a small church in the upper midwest. It was during a hard time that he discovered Doug Field’s book, “Purpose Driven Youth Ministry.” That led him on a pilgrimage to Saddleback Church, one of the most influential churches in the country. His future was forever changed by the relationships he formed there. Now the Jr High Pastor at Mariners Church, Josh shares about the challenges of large church ministry (5 youth services on Easter!), the formative days of Download Youth Ministry (which was almost named Digital Youth Ministry), the democratization of youth ministry resources, and how optimism is the only way forward in these troubled times. We also find out how our own Brock Morgan was selected as a trainer for the National Day of Volunteer Youth Ministry Training! Josh is a generous spirit and we are grateful for his friendship and encouragement. It’s a great conversation.…
Smelly Cabins, Snack Shack, Silly Skits, Scary Bus Rides, Smooching Kids – nothing says summer like Summer Camp! Even after our many years of experience and all the various programs we’ve led, we still believe in Summer Camp. It’s one of the foundations of our ministries. Summer Camp provides the chance to get away, break rhythm, avoid distractions, build relationships, and have significant, life-changing moments with God. There’s no substitute. Despite its long-standing history and value, we’ve also seen an increasing reluctance on the part of parents to send their kids to camp. Mix that in with travel sports and the financial costs, and it’s not an easy thing to get kids to go! But we still love it, still sold on it, and are still taking our kids this summer. Hear our reasons, and do likewise!…

Episode 18: The Beauty and Necessity of Contemplative Youth Ministry With anxiety at an all-time high and attention spans at an all-time low, how can youth pastors help our students experience God in deeper and more meaningful ways? Is it more than music, games and messages? On this episode, Shannon, Brock and Steve talk about the value and beauty of contemplative practices in youth ministry. Whether it’s the Prayer Labyrinth Steve’s group just experienced, or Lectio Divina in Shannon’s ministry, or a chance to get prayed for every week in Brock’s ministry, we think we’re onto something significant. These aren’t new ideas–– in fact, most of the practices are centuries old–but modern churches often forget how powerful they can be. We’ve made them part of our regular ministry rhythm, and we hope others might do the same. Our students crave it. Who knows, maybe our ideas will even work upwards into “big church?” This is an episode your students need! You probably do, too. Sadly, we are missing Shannon today, but Brock and Steve got together the day after they both preached in their churches’ main services to talk about our experiences with preaching. It can be a big deal for youth pastors. We both get to do it regularly, and we’ve seen the benefits our time in the “pulpit” has brought to our ministry within the congregation. Whether you preach once a year or once a month, preaching is a great way to gain credibility, speak into the culture of our church, and celebrate the Next Generation. But it also brings some challenges, like time management (we still have to plan for youth group that week), staying humble (“I like it when YOU preach!), and not trying to sound smarter than we are. Preaching is really important, yet probably less important than we make it. The most important question is this: pulpit, podium or music stand? Youth Ministry Sherpas: Coast To Coast
Today, we talk about money. It’s a sore subject in youth pastor circles. Many youth pastors and youth workers feel underpaid, unappreciated, and undervalued. What’s worse; talking about it or asking for more feels unspiritual. Aren’t we just in it for the kids? Well, yes, but what can we do to improve our financial viability so we can take care of our families, build church health, and achieve longevity in youth ministry? Dan Navarra is our guest. Dan is the creator and curator of the Annual Youth Pastor Compensation Report. https://www.chemistrystaffing.com/resources/compensation-youth-pastor-2023/ Dan is passionate about helping workers earn what we’re worth. He has a wealth of experience working with youth pastors, churches and leaders, and offers some powerful advice for us. The news isn’t all good – we have a long way to go – but being informed enough to advocate for ourselves is an important step. The Youth Ministry Sherpas get pretty fired up over this one. You will, too. Brock is back from sabbatical, if you can call it that. A month off–albeit with two interruptions, a speaking engagement, and painful back issues. But there was also a trip to San Diego, another trip to London, and some sweet time with God. So, in hindsight, what did Brock learn about himself, about his identity in Christ, and what it is that keeps us in youth ministry? How do we do what we do without letting it be who we are? Later, we talk about what we consider “success.” In a time when youth ministry is harder than ever–when so many students walk away (see last week’s episode) and the cultural forces are working overtime against us and our students–how do we know it’s not all in vain? Where do we define the win, and where do we find it? The answer may surprise you. Welcome back, Brock. We are Brockless no more! Our first-ever interview guest is Brad Griffin, Senior Director of Content and Research for the Fuller Youth Institute, and co-author of their new book, Faith Beyond Youth Group. It has been nearly 20 years since Sticky Faith brought to light the troubling truth about Millennials leaving the church. Those same problems–exacerbated by accelerating technology, anxiety, and a worldwide pandemic–are affecting Gen Z. What can youth workers, parents, and church leaders do to stem the tide of young people abandoning the church? Steve and Brad have a great conversation around the unique characteristics of America’s largest generation, and how we can foster true Christ-like character to create a better generation of Christians than the ones they are following. It's February and we're still Brock-less. However, Shannon and Steve got together to talk about Valentine's Day, the Super Bowl, and more importantly -- Youth Ministry. What happens when our students surpass their parents in spiritual maturity? Sometimes it's students from nonChristian backgrounds, but it can also be students from within the church. How do we challenge them to keep growing and pursuing Jesus but not undermine their parents? We also talk about the painful reality of when students we know and love suddenly drop off the face of the earth. Every youth worker experiences this. How do we strike a balance between pursuing the kid who's ghosting us, but letting them go for our emotional preservation? Shannon also gives another plug for the Barbie movie, while Steve recommends a classic Robin Williams movie, and another movie about... chess? We also give a teaser for our first-ever Sherpa interview, coming later this month. It's Episode 13 of the Youth Ministry Sherpas Coast to Coast, so roll down the windows and let's get started! Brock is still on sabbatical, but Shannon and Steve connect for a great conversation about tradition, innovation, and who should be playing in the Super Bowl this year. Youth Ministry is usually on the cutting edge of church culture, which means we are always up for trying something new. At the same time, creating stability and traditions for our students can be a valuable gift. How do we know when to change it up, and how do we know when "We've Always Done It That Way" is the right answer? Our second segment is about our ability to "Wing It." Knowing ourselves and our youth ministry brethren, we wonder if procrastination is a curse or necessary part of the youth pastor gene? How does that impact our effectiveness, and what can we do about it? By the time you hear this our hopes will be either realized or dashed, but nevertheless we make our wishes known for the Super Bowl. Despite what she says, Shannon is clearly letting a certain Pop Star determine her fandom. It's time for Episode 12 of the Youth Ministry Sherpas Coast to Coast! Our first episode of 2024, and we're already Brockless! Brock is on sabbatical and will miss a couple episodes, but Shannon and Steve are back to kick things off. Steve went to the Passion Conference in Atlanta the first few days of the year (along with 55,000 college students) and while it was awesome, it also got him thinking about worship, emotions, and their role in youth ministry. How do we strike a balance between bringing students into a transcendent experience but not making "the experience" the point? What is the role of worship in faith development for today's generation? Our "Get to Know Your Sherpa" segment highlights the differences between the East and West Coast (related to fireworks), and we chat about the role of laughter, games and silliness in youth ministry as well. Maybe laughter and tears aren't so far removed from each other. Episode 11 of the Youth Ministry Sherpas Coast to Coast! The Youth Ministry Sherpas met for the very first time ever at Mariner’s Church in sunny SoCal at the Download Youth Ministry Conference. Not only did we have fun together, we also spent some time with some of the most amazing youth workers on the planet. Five of them – with a combined 140 years experience – are featured in this episode. When did they want to quit, and what got them through? The answers are honest and encouraging. We also discovered that Shannon has been to Dick Van Dyke’s house (it figures), Brock makes 72 cents when he sells a book, and Steve has made middle school girls cry by showing them a National Geographic video of a lion eating a gazelle. Youth Ministry Sherpas: Coast To Coast
We've all experienced the outreach gone wrong. (Hint: It usually involves a lock-in.) In this episode, we talk about some recent outreach events we've done and share nightmares from the past. Then we back up and talk about the reason for doing them in the first place. What is the purpose and what is the win when it comes to outreach? In the bigger picture, in this day and age when "church" isn't always a good word to outsiders and church reputations can be tainted by politics and misrepresentations, how do youth ministries engage our community with love and give those outside the church a reason to like us? All this, plus Brock survived a stop in Vegas, Shannon survived a Barbie Silent Disco, and Steve survived October in general. Plus, we solved the problem of worship preferences forever! All this on Episode 9 of the Youth Ministry Sherpas Coast to Coast with Brock, Shannon and Steve. Youth Ministry Sherpas: Coast To Coast
In an age of rising mental health awareness, constant connectivity, and youth sports worship, it has become increasingly common for parents to care more about protecting their kids from struggles than developing their charac ter. As youth pastors, we can sometimes get caught in the spinning blades of helicopter parents. How can we encourage parents to permit the proper amount of discomfort to exist in their kids' lives? And for us who are parents, well, this is for us, too! And let's face it: Youth Pastors always want their students to invite friends. Sometimes, though, we have to check our motivations to make sure we are doing it for God's Kingdom and not our own. We also talk about our grandparents, favorite dead presidents, and why middle school girls make the best hosts for a Coldplay concert. All this on Episode 8 of the Youth Ministry Sherpas Coast to Coast with Brock, Shannon and Steve. On today's episode, we discuss this generation's infatuation with authenticity. Is the fear of being.a hypocrite keeping kids from following Jesus, and if so, are we doing enough to teach grace? Fittingly, we also have an authentic conversation about how to be a pastor when we don't feel worthy ourselves. Is it hypocritical to stand up and teach when we have doubts and struggles of our own? How do we power through and honorably serve as purveyors of our own fragile faith? All this, plus Brock reveals that he's figured out the book of Revelation, Shannon disses Dunkin, and Steve admits he's never seen a Fast and Furious movie. Youth Ministry Sherpas: Coast To Coast
Episode 6 is probably what you need right about now! With the fall season ramped up, it's easy to focus on "doing" instead of "being." When life as a youth pastor takes on breakneck speed, how do we keep ourselves spiritually healthy and serve from overflow instead of overwork? Then we talk about authors who have influenced our spiritual journey. Hint: most of them are dead. Lastly, in the world of youth ministry, senior pastors get a worse rap than mother-in-laws. But it can be different, and better. We share thoughts and practices that have helped us not only get along with our senior pastors, but helped champion our ministries in the process. All this, plus stories of catching kids making out, and what to say to kill the romance with embarrassment. It's "Youth Ministry with the Windows Down!" Thanks for coming along for the ride! 1 Episode 5: Hurriquakes, Backyard Dream Concerts, and What to Do With Students Who Are Hard to Like 47:57
Episode 5 might be our most fun -- and honest -- yet. Brock and Shannon survive the "Great California Hurriquake" of 2023, right before Fall Kickoff (always fantastic). There's nothing quite like that early momentum and seeing all our kids come back for another year together. But as much as we love students, we have to admit some are harder for us to like than others. Following up on our conversation last week about people who don't like us, we discuss the types of students we don't necessarily like. How can we love them anyway? Then Brock brings us our "Get to Know You" question, and it's a good one. If you could host any band, living or dead, in your backyard, who would it be? (It's a good thing this can't happen or Shannon would probably black out.) Finally, how do we navigate the tension between championing our ministries and celebrating the whole church? Youth Ministry Sherpas: Coast To Coast
It’s our fourth episode, and we keep learning more about each other. We discover that there are actually people (at least one) who don’t like Brock. Or Steve. (Of course everyone loves Shannon.) How do we handle the inevitability of not being liked by everyone? Next, with school starting back up, we talk about the school choices church families make. Is there a difference between homeschool, private school and public school kids? Do our ministries reflect the diversity in those choices? And how do we lessen the pressure on parents to “make the right choice.” Lastly, anyone in youth ministry knows that churches can hurt us. Each of us has seen and experienced a lot of hard things among God’s people, but somehow we are still committed to doing this thing in our local churches. Youth Ministry Sherpas: Coast To Coast
It's the 3rd episode of the Youth Ministry Sherpas ** Coast to Coast ** and we are having a great time together! The Barbie Movie is all the rage. Steve and Shannon think it's hilarious. Any good youth pastor (sorry Brock) should have seen it by now. What does it teach us about this cultural moment and issues facing our students, and should we re-think how we do ministry to the girls in our group? We also share what the perfect night of youth group looks like to us (hint: there will be laughter). And we talk about our teaching ideas for the fall (if we have any), the value of curriculum, and how important is it -- really -- to "kill it" with the message every week? All this, plus Shannon gets burned by her daughter about her pickleball skills and Brock can't go to eat out after youth group anymore without a bottle of Tums. It's the second episode of the Youth Ministry Sherpas ** Coast to Coast **! As we redirect our thinking toward the fall, we stop to celebrate the iconic moments of Summer Camp 2023! But first, we have to address the pressing question on the minds of youth workers everywhere (especially Shannon): Are Aliens real, and what in the world (or outer space) do we tell our students about them? Then it's back to talking about the Fall, with all its momentum, big moments, planning and hype. What do we love most about the ever-robust fall calendar of youth ministry? And of course, it wouldn't be youth ministry without at least one failed attempt by Brock at a Nacho Libre reference. All that and more on EPISODE #2! PLEASE LEAVE US A ***** FIVE STAR REVIEW ***** ON I-TUNES! It’s Thanksgiving Week, and before Mathew overdoses on carbs and Steve spends 20 hours in the car, we thought it would be good to show our gratitude. I mean, who isn’t thankful for free t-shirts, Fabreeze, and youth group leftovers? But in all seriousness, we are thankful for many things, both youth ministry and personal. We are even thankful for each other. And Taylor Swift. Episode 108 is a good reminder that we get to live the best life! Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! We are thankful for YOU! PLEASE LEAVE US A ***** FIVE STAR REVIEW ***** ON I-TUNES! It’s Sunday night, and you are riding the spiritual high from all the great ministry that took place at the retreat this weekend. All your planning, effort, and prayer came together in an amazing weekend. Lives were changed. The Spirit was there! You were fulfilled. Life is great! Until Monday. The Day After. Or for some of us, Tuesday. The Day After the Day After. Because the crash is coming. It always does. Just ask Moses. Or Elijah. Or any youth worker ever. On today’s episode, Mathew puts Steve on the therapist’s couch following his big fall retreat. The emotional, physical and spiritual toll of a big weekend or week in youth ministry is no joke. Even after 30 years of doing this and even knowing it’s coming, Steve is feeling it big time. What can we do so that the crash is more of a gentle touchdown instead of a full-blown disaster. PLEASE LEAVE US A ***** FIVE STAR REVIEW ***** ON I-TUNES! Kids are going to mess up. That’s a fact. Blame it on their undeveloped frontal lobe. Blame it on their non-Christian friends. Blame it on yourself. Whatever the case, teenagers are going to mess up. They are going to disappoint us, embarrass us, and leave us wishing we could send them to timeout. In fact, both of us have done that before. And we are starting to regret it. While we want the best for our students, have high expectations for them, and want them to lean into the life God has for them, what if our response when they fail to meet our expecttions actually does more harm then good? What if we raised the bar of grace as high as the bar of behavior? Just some random thoughts today as we discuss the topic of what to do when our students do not meet our youth pastor expectations. 1:12:08PLEASE LEAVE US A ***** FIVE STAR REVIEW ***** ON I-TUNES! An interview with Brad Griffin! So much of youth ministry is built on programming, hype, and fun. But under the surface of all of that great stuff lies the existential workings of the teenage mind. That’s where we need to go, and where we go in today’s episode. What are teenagers really thinking about? What are the deeper questions they are wrestling with? A new book from Fuller Youth Institute digs deeply into this subject and supplies us with a simple framework from which to have better conversations with the students we love. https://fulleryouthinstitute.org/3-big-questions Brad Griffin, co-author of the book, is on today’s show. Brad is the Senior Director of Content for the Fuller Youth Institute, where he develops research-based training for youth workers and parents. A speaker, writer, and volunteer youth pastor, Brad is the co-author of over a dozen books, Faith in an Anxious World, Growing Young, several Sticky Faith books, Every Parent’s Guide to Navigating Our Digital World, and Can I Ask That? Brad and his family live in Southern California, where he serves as Pastor of Youth and Family Ministries at Mountainside Communion. https://fulleryouthinstitute.org/ And what are the 3 big questions? Who am I? Where do I fit? What difference can I make? This is fascinating and insightful conversation you may even want to share with parents in your ministry. At the very least, you will want to read the book and get it into the hands of your youth leaders and families in your church. Steve spent hours updating our website. PLEASE LEAVE US A ***** FIVE STAR REVIEW ***** ON I-TUNES! Youth ministry is all about the teaching, right? “You killed that message!” “That was a homerun!” “You were on fire!” Yeah, maybe. But the truth is, for most of us, teaching is a bit of a grind, a grind which is not enhanced by the pressure we put on ourselves. Sometimes we might be really good; other times not so much. We are not called to be great all the time. We are called to faithfully talk to our students about Jesus and help them grow spiritually. Nothing more, nothing less. We are called to be--in the terminology of today’s report cards--consistently satisfactory. In the second part of our series, things get real. We have some honest confessions. Steve sometimes prepares on Sunday afternoon right before his group meets. Mathew once did the same message three weeks in a row until someone noticed. But beyond that, we get into the nuts and bolts of teaching. How (and when) do we prepare? What parts of the presentation are important to us? How long should messages be? And we discuss the controversial question Jesus wrestled with – slides or no slides? All this, plus dead bodies flying out the window! We are called to be--in the terminology of today’s report cards--consistently satisfactory. In this episode, Steve and Mathew take some of the pressure of being great in front of students. It’s easy to compare ourselves to everyone’s best as portrayed on social media, but our students benefit most from the ones who know them and love them best, even if we aren’t as good as Francis Chan (or the youth pastor down the street). So let’s go easy on ourselves when it comes to judging our teaching. Be good. Be prepared. But be easy on yourself. Teaching is important, but it’s not everything. PLEASE LEAVE US A ***** FIVE STAR REVIEW ***** ON I-TUNES! As much as we love what we do as youth pastors, we’ve come to realize that there’s more to building the Kingdom of God than building our youth group. We want to impact students beyond the walls of our church. But how? Today’s conversation takes a different tone. We aren’t as interested in providing answers as we are asking the right questions. How do we fulfill our responsibilities to the church that hired us, but also think beyond it? How do we send students out but not feel like we’re losing them? How do we partner with para-church groups who might be vying for the same students we are? How do we serve the students we might never even meet? And what difference might it make if we saw ourselves as sending agencies rather than “bringing” agencies? Our goal is help our students formulate a version of the Christian faith that represents Jesus well and brings people to God instead of turning them away from him. These are the questions we wrestle through in this conversation. We hope it stirs some thoughts in you as well. It’s Episode 102 – Reaching Beyond the Walls Steve spent hours updating our website. PLEASE LEAVE US A ***** FIVE STAR REVIEW ***** ON I-TUNES! Who doesn’t love retreats? They are part of every youth ministry, as essential as pizza and Axe body spray. But how do we go about planning a great retreat? What factors should we consider as we take students away for the weekend? In this episode, we talk about retreats in terms of “spaces.” We need space for relationships, for spiritual growth, for fun, and for disconnection. It’s hard to do all that in one weekend, but it’s possible. After 60 years in youth ministry and hundreds of weekends away, we are still learning how to do it better. PLEASE LEAVE US A ***** FIVE STAR REVIEW ***** ON I-TUNES! When Steve and Mathew first got this idea, back in 2017, to create a podcast to encourage youth workers to keep going, it seemed like a fun, somewhat daunting, pie-in-the-sky concept. It also seemed like overkill. I mean, who needs another podcast? Who would listen? And who do we think we are? Until we got the most brilliant idea in the history of podcasting--use llamas in the branding. With that, the Youth Ministry Sherpas were born. Since then, it’s been all uphill. Episode #00 launched on January 16, 2018. Now, nearly four years of adventures and outtakes, we’ve made it to Episode 100, which technically is something like Episode 207, but that’s part of the story. In this episode, we celebrate our history together. The early awkwardness, the introduction of the insane idea to do 26 straight days of “Sherpa Shorts,” our trips to DYM 100 and the rental of the epic beachfront Sherpa House, the National Youth Worker’s Convention that almost got stuck on the tarmac of BWI, and our entry into the humbling world of “Sherpa Legends.” Of course, we also share our blooper reel, which could double as a ventriloquist test pack. Anyway, with over 60 years of ministry experience, and 108 years of life, here is Episode 100 of the Youth Ministry Sherpas Podcast. A Tour De Farce, er, we mean, a Tour De Force. Holy Llama Lips, it’s the Fourth Season of Sherpa ShortsI This June, for 22 straight days, we are choosing a memorable song and then riffing about how it relates to youth ministry. This year we decided to go decade by decade, choosing 2 songs each, starting with the 70s and progressing to 2021. What’s the best decade for music? Steve says it’s the 80s. I mean, it’s hard to top Springsteen, the Police, Tom Petty, REO Speedwagon, and Michael Jackson, right? Mathew says the 80s has too much keyboard and polyester. He says it’s the 90s. Okay, we admit it’s wishful thinking. The pandemic isn’t quite over. In some places it’s as bad as ever. But we are both vaccinated, so we are feeling like we’ve awakened from a bad dream and are ready to move forward. Today, we wrap up our series about church and youth ministry post-covid. While we thought our first two conversations were helpful, our topic today is the most important of all. How do we care for our souls as youth workers in this crazy, post-pandemic world? We are excited to share the rest of our conversation with our two friends. James Sabin is the Youth and Family Pastor at Kingdom Community Church in Morgantown, WV, where he has served for 11 years. He is also the host of the Youth Ministry Soul Keeper Podcast on the DYM network or wherever you listen to podcasts. Jessica Sanchez is a trained spiritual director, a long-time youth ministry volunteer, the Director of Marketplace for Download Youth Ministry, and co-host of the Download Youth Ministry Podcast with Doug Fields, Josh Griffin and Katie Edwards. Let’s face it – this year was hard on our souls. We experienced stress, interruption, disruption, conflict, isolation, loss of relationships, and even loss of life. As pastors and youth workers, we found ourselves being asked for answers while we were searching for them ourselves. We would be remiss if we didn’t take some time to reflect on this experience and what we can learn from it. Our conversation covered such tough topics as, how to respond when you are angry at how other Christians are responding, how to implement personal spiritual practices to help us avoid falling into the busy trap we were in before covid, and how to lead not only our students, but our congregations, into healthier spiritual habits for the next season. All of this with two friends of ours who are honest, vulnerable, humble and wise. You will be blessed. Our conversation covered such tough topics as, how to respond when you are angry at how other Christians are responding, how to implement personal spiritual practices to help us avoid falling into the busy trap we were in before covid, and how to lead not only our students but our congregations, into healthier spiritual habits for the next season. All of this with two friends of ours who are honest, vulnerable, humble, and wise. You will be blessed. Okay, we admit it’s wishful thinking. The pandemic isn’t quite over. In some places it’s as bad as ever. But we are both vaccinated, so we are feeling like we’ve awakened from a bad dream and are ready to move forward. That being said, there are some serious challenges ahead. The “return to normal” we’ve all clamored for isn’t reality. There will be a new way forward, and things will never quite be the same. So now that the pandemic is over…what’s next? To that end, we are presenting a new 3-part series. In part 2, after we discuss Steve’s new pizza oven, we talk about YOUTH MINISTRY PROGRAMMING. What is next for youth ministry world? We are all clamoring to get back to “normal,” and first inclination is to immediately begin everything we were doing before. We miss the energy, the excitement, the room full of students and the bus trip to camp every other weekend. But is that the wisest thing? Would we be better served to step back and evaluate what we were doing before to see if it’s the best thing to do in the future? We think so. We think this is an unprecedented (that freakin’ word again!) time to throw everything on the table, wrestle it to the ground, and decide if it’s the best idea or just the thing we’ve always done. And here are two killer questions to ask ourselves along the way: Are we willing to kill our own sacred cow? And are we willing to support ideas we don’t like, but might be best? In the meantime, we suggest doing at least one thing that feels like throwing candy from a float this summer. Hope you enjoy episode 97. What will the impact of this tumultuous season be on pastors? Barna says that fewer than 50% of Americans will be attending church. What will become of the church in America? It’s not all butterflies and roses, but we believe God will ultimately bring good from it. Mathew decided to get out of ministry before he had to figure it out. Lame! Just kidding. Here’s a heartfelt discussion from two guys who have been doing this for over 50 combined years. Mathew has something huge to tell us. Meanwhile, Steve can’t even… Today we reveal something we’ve known about for a while. After 30 years in youth ministry and 16 years at his current church, Mathew is leaving the pastorate and heading out into the great unknown called “Life Outside of the Church.” This raises so many questions. How did he arrive at this decision? Why would he do such a thing? What’s he going to do next? What existential crisis does this create in Steve? And of course, the biggest question of all and the one we know you are asking with fear and trepidation, “What does this mean for the future of the Youth Ministry Sherpas Podcast?” We answer all of that and more (well, at least we try) in this episode. Plus, stories about our amazing November recording getaway, why Mathew walked into the Sherpa studio like a drunk man, and the strange tale of some dude who got a driveway full of oil-soaked pennies. Today we continue our series “Creating a Culture of…” The most important part of being a successful youth pastor isn’t teaching, meeting with kids, or planning events. It isn’t how charismatic we are, or how big our budget is. The most important thing is building a culture, what we call the “environmental architecture of a healthy ministry. Over time, our culture becomes a living entity, a self-perpetuating lifeform, allowing our ministries to grow and flourish year after year. It’s bigger than us and bigger than our current crop of students or leaders. For this series, we’ve identified four key elements of any youth ministry culture – fun, outreach, leadership, and family. Today, Mathew and Steve discuss how to create a cult. (Just kidding. See our Instagram account). Actually, we saved the best for last. This one is near and dear to our hearts. Creating a culture of family is one of the things we are most committed to. The best youth ministries aren’t the ones with the flashiest youth rooms, the best worship band, or the killer speaker. The best youth ministries are the ones where every kid who comes—whether they are regulars or first-timers--feels like they are known and loved. We help create this culture by removing barriers and cliques, providing intense shared experiences, building a sense of mission, using warm and inclusive language, and developing a natural and deep vulnerability. The amazing thing is that this aspect of our culture will serve all the others, bringing kids into the fold and ultimately into a relationship with Jesus. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a family that loves everyone? Our greatest reward is when kids graduate from our ministry and tell us, “You are like a family to me.” Always remember, “The Greatest Need of the Human Heart is to Belong.” Just remember to attribute that to Steve when you hang the sign on your wall. By the way, we do not recommend pledging for youth ministry! Send us a picture of your refrigerator! Mathew thinks he has the bougiest! Steve spent hours updating our website. Today, Mathew and Steve discuss how to create a culture of leadership. Creating a culture of student leadership has been on the radar since our first days in youth ministry. There have been plenty of missteps and restarts, but it seems like we’ve landed in a good spot and are seeing the fruit of our efforts. Our Student Leadership teams have become our primary way of creating and multiplying disciples of Jesus. There are plenty of ways to go about it, but for for student leadership to work, student leaders always need training, significant responsibility, freedom to fail, and time to debrief what they are learning. And it’s not for the control freak. Whether we are developing a student worship band or unleashing your high schoolers on your middle-schoolers, we have to be ready for things to get messy. But when all is said and done, student leaders will become better disciples of Jesus. They might even return as your volunteers or staff! The Youth Ministry Sherpas recommend Tim Elmore’s series “Habitudes” for Student Leader training: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=habitudes+by+tim+elmore&crid=310S1DD93198O&sprefix=habitudes%2Caps%2C662&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_3_9 Steve spent hours updating our website. Today, Mathew and Steve discuss how to create a culture of outreach. With the current generation more unchurched than ever, it’s important to remain focused on those outside our walls, inspiring students to be others-focused as we tell the world about Jesus. We can help by making sure we use non-churchy language in our ministry, by encouraging our students to think tribally and strategically about reaching out to their friends, and by being involved in the community ourselves. With so many responsibilities associated with running a youth ministry, outreach is easy to leave behind. A healthy youth ministry will always be thinking of fresh ways to reach new students and perpetuate a culture of outreach. We believe at least 25% of a healthy youth ministry should be students whose families do not yet attend your church. By the way, we are still waiting for someone to take us up on our Youth Pastor Exchange Program. Daytona? Scottsdale? Santa Monica? Anyone? You think you feel great after a haircut? What’s more fun than listening to the Youth Ministry Sherpas podcast? How about a healthy youth ministry? Today we kick off a four-part series called “Creating a Culture of…” The most important part of being a successful youth pastor isn’t teaching, meeting with kids, or planning events. It isn’t how charismatic we are, or how big our budget is. The most important thing is to build a culture, what we call the “environmental architecture of a healthy ministry. Over time, our culture becomes a living entity, a self-perpetuating lifeform, allowing our ministries to grow and flourish year after year. It’s bigger than us and bigger than our current crop of students or leaders. Many elements go into creating a culture. For this series, we’ve identified four of them. Today, Mathew and Steve discuss the value of fun. Whether it’s silly games that disarm the “too cool for school” crowd and envelope the shy ones, or the ridiculous traditions that began by accident and now have more sequels than the Fast and Furious franchise, fun is a non-negotiable part of a healthy youth ministry. It’s something to focus on, fight for, and never forget. Remember, take the gospel seriously, but don’t take yourself seriously. By the way, we are still waiting for someone to take us up on our Youth Pastor Exchange Program. Daytona? Scottsdale? Santa Monica? Anyone?…
What is wrong with you people!? What do you mean you don’t agree with everything we say? What do you mean the Youth Ministry Sherpas Podcast is not your favorite podcast ever? It’s easy to take offense—these days, probably easier than ever. Someone is always upset over something. As youth workers, we might be offended by someone’s opinion about our program, by their political views, by their lack of involvement in our ministry. And let’s face it, we probably are experts at offending others, too. People getting offended is more rampant in churches than coronavirus, and youth workers are not immune. When we respond with defensiveness, with justification, or with sharp words, we only pour gas on the fire and make our lives more difficult. What if we make a concerted effort to be different? What if we are willing to look beyond the surface, give people the benefit of the doubt, respond gently, take it on the chin even if we think we are right, and above all – show humility? Would our modeling of pastoral humility make a difference in our lives, in our churches, and in our students’ futures? Yes, we think it would. It would also make us more like Jesus. This is an episode born of failed experiences. Humility is always the play. Hey, Steve spent hours updating our website. It’s February. It’s icy. It’s cold. We haven’t seen the sun since the 1840s. (Okay, a slight exaggeration, but it feels that way.) If you live in Maryland, Wisconsin, New England, or the Midwest, you understand. If you live in California, well…whatever. Loser. Regardless of where you live, it’s the time of the year in youth ministry when it feels like everyone just wants to take a nap. The thrill of fall kickoff is a distant memory. The holidays are over. It feels like we are biding our time until summer camp or the next big trip. How do we keep our enthusiasm, avoid resigning, and keep our students interested through the inevitable season we call, “The Doldrums”? In today’s episode, we share our thoughts about how to manufacture even small jolts of energy throughout the year. Whether it’s coming up with a contest or challenge, catching up on some things we’ve always wanted to do but didn’t have time for, or just reminding ourselves that the ups and downs are par for the course, we think our ideas might be helpful for you as you push through the winter to more exciting times ahead. We also share our Super Bowl predictions (hint: we were wrong). And you won’t want to miss the wonderful greetings we share from our spam folder. Who knew that our Belly Dancing episode would be one of our most popular? Not bad for two guys who apparently are in the demographic for Cialis marketing. We’ve been pretty serious lately. All this societal upheaval has us wound too tight, like a tiny covid mask on a giant head. It’s time to lighten up. So today we needed to laugh. And to laugh, we tell stories. Youth ministry is a wild world. It takes you to places you never expected to be, and puts you in situations you never saw coming. How many insurance adjusters get to rescue freshmen boys from a shirtless nursing mother in the Dominican Republic, or are forced to pull over the 15-passenger van along a lonely stretch of Utah highway because one of their kids thought laxatives were a good idea? Whether you’ve been in youth ministry for 30 years or six months, you have stories to tell that only other youth workers will understand. We simply nod, laugh, and say, “Yeah, that sounds about right.” Due to our ages, we can’t vouch for the complete accuracy of what you are about to hear, but it’s the world as best as we can remember. 1:01:07Politics, covid, race, -- it has been a tumultuous 10 months. We spent the previous two episodes processing some of our frustrations with the culture of division and talking about how we can help our students think more clearly and with a broader perspective. To bring closure, we thought it would be helpful to bring in another voice, and we have to say, we chose wisely! Theo Davis is a youth pastor in Kansas City. He’s also an artist, a father, an introvert, and a voice of reason, gentleness, and unity. He’s also black, serving in a mostly white neighborhood, in a city with a deep history of racism. He has experienced more racism in his life than we realized. The two old white guys who host this show needed to listen to him. We’re guessing you do, too. Listening, asking questions, gaining empathy – these are the things that can bring friendship and understanding instead of arguments and echo chambers. Oddly, before this conversation, we’d never met. But we have a lot in common. Theo is from Maryland. He served for seven years at one of the state’s biggest churches. He grew up in Mathew’s backyard in Montgomery County (well, not literally, but almost), and one of his former youth leaders was one of Steve’s favorite students in high school. Theo is an active part of the Download Youth Ministry family, serving as a moderator in our Facebook Community. https://www.facebook.com/groups/DYMCommunity Theo’s post following the George Floyd murder and subsequent riots was shared over 6,000 times. It’s called, “8 Things My White Friends Can Do.” https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=10100539258863013&set=a.655426947283 Other resources Theo recommends: https://www.amazon.com/Color-Compromise-American-Churchs-Complicity/dp/0310113601 https://www.amazon.com/How-Fight-Racism-Courageous-Christianity/dp/0310104777 https://serialpodcast.org/ (season 3) One Steve recommends: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/23/podcasts/1619-podcast.html One Mathew recommends: https://theundefeated.com We are proud members of the Download Youth Ministry Podcast Network! https://podcast.downloadyouthministry.com/ Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @youthministrysherpas. The Youth Ministry Sherpas are back for another discussion about how to help our students think critically in a world gone mad. Recording this the day after the inauguration, we are pleased to mention that Washington, DC is still standing, and we are still here. We are still picking up the pieces of the turbulence this year has brought while trying to navigate how to pastor our students well through these times. One thing we believe is that perspective is everything. We want to create youth ministries where students appreciate the diversity of Christians throughout the world and understand that not everyone interprets things like we do. We have some suggestions in how we can grow personally as we can create environments where our students can think, grow, be challenged, and avoid perpetuating a stifling subculture. It’s a high calling, to shape the future of the church! We both recommend The Chosen: https://www.vidangel.com/show/the-chosen-a7284/season/1 As if national unrest isn’t bad enough, now even the squirrels are angry! https://news.yahoo.com/angry-vicious-spate-squirrel-attacks-073031163.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9zZWFyY2gueWFob28uY29tLw&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAABwOEU6EC3r4hdDaIRjrgkalJWCZeFwNZFG7qSz2hnTUDr5e7C5v2VKkKviTfDtsApZuokcjd0-QpYvrIiVGnoCpVUjhX3yZEwlDjBQLFx-nZ2WqCzPLu2MLMigSTlXOtRTg7s_TzdTW25ySbwUA1cEWiwRFslXncY-3FM8F9apV We are proud members of the Download Youth Ministry Podcast Network! https://podcast.downloadyouthministry.com/ You can find us on Facebook and other social media: Twitter -- @youthministrysherpas Instagram -- @youthministrysherpas…
We took a couple months off, and the world lost its collective mind! The Sherpas, who both live a few miles north of Washington, DC, are swimming in the waters of politics in our cities and our churches. Watching riots in the Capitol building recently (and recording this just two days prior to an inauguration to be conducted under lockdown), we cannot escape the craziness. Neither can our students. We are thinking and talking about it, and so are they. No one is blind to the tumult our country has experienced in recent months. The problem for us as youth workers is, how do we talk to our students about politics and represent Jesus while doing so? And how do we avoid falling into a pothole so deep we’ll never make it out alive, or employed? In this episode, we talk about some filters we find helpful. These help us, and our students, think critically about the information we consume and how to respond to it. Hopefully, it helps us see the world as Jesus sees it. Every youth worker knows the struggle of navigating the mine field of social media with their students. Now we realize how serious this challenge is not only in what they post, but in what their posts do to them. “The technology that connects us also controls us.” The Social Dilemma (thesocialdilemma.com) is a documentary film about the rising effects of social media on us, our children, and our world. It’s an eye-opening look behind the scenes by the people who made the products. It’s even a bit frightening, and definitely worth a conversation. The Sherpas are joined by our good friend Brock Morgan, youth pastor, author, and speaker, as we discuss our thoughts about the film and the challenges we face as advocates for teenagers. Can we protect ourselves and our kids from becoming pawns in a giant matrix? Can we challenge our students to be the agents of change for the future? Will we even know it if it happens, or will be just be numbers in the algorithm? We thought it was a fascinating topic. We think you will agree. (By the way, we are whispering right now, because we are certain we are being watched.) The Youth Ministry Sherpas are struggling. This has been a hard year for everyone. A worldwide pandemic, racial tensions, political divisiveness, church shutdowns, social media tirades, constant pivots, lose-lose decisions, constant criticisms, health struggles, personal losses--there is a giant buffet of factors that have taken their toll on us. We are weary. We are thinking of renting a cave in New Mexico for the foreseeable future. We know we are struggling, but how are our students doing? Who is helping them process these tumultuous days? Who is present in this mess with them? Who is bringing a perspective that this is not the first time the world has been in an angry uproar? What if this is an opportunity to set this generation on a course to make a better way? Just talking through this together helped us feel better. We hope it will help you as well. Heck, even the parrots are mad! We feel like we are in the middle of a 15-round fight and we keep taking body blow after body blow. We are weary. We are betting there are plenty of youth pastors who feel this way. Are you discouraged, tired, defeated, discouraged, frustrated and lonely? The bad news is we have no real answers to give. The good news is we have each other, and it feels good to talk about it. We hope you see yourself in this conversation if for no other reason than to realize you are not alone. 82: Youth Ministry in an Angry World We are proud members of the Download Youth Ministry Podcast Network! https://podcast.downloadyouthministry.com/…

Youth Ministry Sherpas: Coast To Coast
It’s May! That means it’s time to put the top down, turn up the radio, and break out the Sherpa Shorts! For the past two years during the month of May, we provided a blast of llama love with a burst of episodes we called the Sherpa Shorts. This year we are choosing some incredible song lyrics and then riffing about how they relate to youth ministry. Great music, sage thoughts, and a playlist for your summer road trip – that sounds like podcast perfection! Enjoy this year’s version of SHERPA SHORTS! Episode 16 – England Dan and John Ford Coley – “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” from the album Nights are Forever (1976) https://open.spotify.com/track/2r008pcfVYc0zgQvSRqUJE?si=demnrRFmQS-b1yyfsSkFvg We are proud members of the DYM Podcast Network https://podcast.downloadyouthministry.com/…
