Does your boyfriend want to wear your pajamas? This week, we talk about funding your business through low-effort side hustles, how to stand out in the oversaturated apparel industry, and the importance of trademarks. I sat down with Dani Eldred, Founder, Owner, and Operator of Cozy Ups, a bamboo pajama brand full of personality. Let’s dive in.

Dani started Cozy Ups at 27, transitioning from designing medical devices to crafting a brand that resonates with comfort and style. With entrepreneurship running in her family, it seemed almost destined that she'd eventually embrace the entrepreneurial life. Despite a successful corporate career, she wished for something more fulfilling and flexible, which led to the birth of Cozy Ups. But transitioning wasn’t easy. It came with its fair share of challenges and self-doubt. Dani admits that the move from healthcare to fashion required a significant mindset shift—believing in the potential success of her new venture rather than fearing its failure.

One fascinating aspect of Dani’s journey is her innovative approach to funding Cozy Ups. Instead of seeking external investments, she leveraged her Airbnb rental income. By reinvesting every penny back into her business, Dani used what she had available to build her business. Her strategy shows us that finding creative ways to fund your business, like side hustles, can make all the difference.

We uncover Dani's secret to standing out in the saturated apparel market: the power of a proprietary product. Cozy Ups’ unique bamboo fabric sets it apart, offering a distinctive edge that keeps customers returning for more. Dani and I discuss the importance of differentiating your brand with a unique value proposition that helps to set your product apart from the crowd.

Dani also shares her experience with trademarks and highlights the importance of protecting your brand. Early on, she realized the significance of safeguarding her business identity. She shares with us why it is important to prioritize trademarks and take legal advice to protect your ideas from potential competitors. With the help of experts who understand the intricacies of business law, Dani ensured Cozy Ups’ long-term success.

In business, just like relationships, it’s crucial to find someone who complements your strengths and elevates your weaknesses. A partner should bring either financial resources or valuable connections that can help you scale - we’re not partnering with friends or family because it could be ‘fun’. Think of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak — one was the visionary while the other was the technical genius. Their mutual respect for each other’s skills was key to Apple’s success. Yet, not all partnerships work out. Often, partners fail to deliver on their promises and we’re here to talk about it. Communication is vital; over-communicate your expectations and document everything. If issues arise, consider renegotiation and always have an exit strategy in place. For these types of scenarios and others, legal agreements are essential to partnerships. You must clearly outline ownership stakes, roles, and what happens if things go south. A solid partnership agreement acts like a prenup for your business, protecting your interests and ensuring both parties are on the same page. While partnerships can be risky, they also offer significant rewards. A good partnership can foster creativity, alleviate pressure, and help you grow faster. But remember, it’s not just about finding any partner; it’s about finding the right one. In the end, partnerships can be your greatest asset or your biggest liability. Be strategic, be methodical, and always prioritize the protection of your business from the start. Thanks for listening to another episode of Young Boss with your host Isabelle Guarino. How can Stoicism lift somebody out of depression and into greatness? This week I sat down with Zach Fisher of New Reach Education. We dive into the lonely and heartless world of sales, business agility, and the mental resilience required to succeed. Starting as a door-to-door salesman, Zach learned the art of perseverance, building tight bonds with his colleagues through trauma bonding, and ultimately how to handle rejection. His transition to in-home sales, where he focused on closing deals in a single call, sharpened his skills even further. However, after subjecting himself to too many ‘on-call’ weekends and having experienced a plentiful amount of rejection, Zach turned to family. It was Zach’s time to change his life. And as it often is with family, it was his brother—a "legend" in the infospace—who opened the door to this world, but it was Zach who made it his own through hard work and strategy. As a key figure at New Reach Education, Zach plays an important role in shaping the company’s marketing, fulfillment, and community initiatives. He emphasizes how partnering with people who share your vision and values is critical to achieving success. But it’s not just about building the right team—it’s about staying agile. Zach warns against becoming too rigid, highlighting the need to balance structure with flexibility to keep your business innovative and responsive to change. Zach also shares with us how he finds joy amongst the chaos. Whether it’s pushing forward through uncertainty or mastering profit and loss statements, he believes success lies in focusing on what you can control. His business philosophy? Find partners that complement your strengths, don’t be afraid to make bold moves, and keep a close eye on your finances. A believer in Stoicism, Zach also discusses with us how this ancient philosophy has been his superpower as an entrepreneur, helping him overcome challenges and take control of his mindset. If you’re looking for actionable strategies to grow your business or ways to harness Stoic principles for entrepreneurial success, you won’t want to miss this episode. Do elections actually have an impact on business? What do you think? This week, Isabelle dives into the complex dynamics of election years and how they impact small businesses. With a lot for debate on the ballot this year, the economy is a hot topic for business owners this year. Isabelle dissects the feelings of small business owners and what surveys say about public opinion.. A recent survey from Entrepreneur.com found that 39% of small business owners lack confidence that beneficial policies will be enacted within the next year. Meanwhile, a surprising 15% of business owners—across political lines—believe that government policies won’t significantly impact their business at all. Is the small business owner stress and borderline-hysteria a “placebo effect”? Is everyone just on edge during election years, where media and political rhetoric amplify anxiety? Isabelle emphasizes the importance of staying grounded in core values, brand identity, and long-term goals rather than allowing external factors to shake your foundation. This week we’re answering your questions about Election Years in business - tune in to find out how to navigate these odd times in business... And politics. This week’s guest’s journey began with a passion for education and children. Lauren So brings a fresh perspective to entrepreneurship in this week’s episode. Growing up with parents who owned private schools, Lauren was inspired to pursue a career working with children, particularly those with special needs. After three years of teaching, she took her mother’s advice and dove into the world of behavior analysis, becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). It was in this field that Lauren saw an overwhelming demand, leading her to start her own business from the ground up. With just $5,000 in her business account (money she claims to never had to use), Lauren faced the challenges of entrepreneurship head-on. From navigating insurance billing and credentialing to figuring out marketing all on her own (a fault she admits in the episode), she built her business one step at a time. Her marketing strategy? A simple Canva account and a slow start with only three calls. But with persistence, she grew her business, eventually hiring employees—a major milestone that brought new responsibilities and challenges like managing turnover and different work styles. Lauren also shares her journey of balancing motherhood and being a boss. As a mom of three and an entrepreneur, she talks candidly about the need for organization and calmness to keep things running smoothly, both at home and in the business. Letting go of control and trusting her team became key to her success, allowing her to focus on the bigger picture while her employees handled day-to-day tasks. In this episode, we also talk about the bigger challenges Lauren faces in her field, from the gatekeeping of information and the often misunderstood public perception of behavior analysis. She dives into the importance of sharing knowledge within the industry and advocating for better representation of behavioral disabilities in the media. If you’re looking for tips on how to balance motherhood with entrepreneurship or how to grow a business from the ground up, Lauren shares her key advice: become an expert, understand the weight of being a boss, and start building your dream while you’re young enough to chase it. In this week’s episode, we’re diving into the world of recruitment and training. We’ll explore the importance of creating accurate job descriptions, the role of AI in hiring, and how to utilize tools like the Predictive Index. We’ll also discuss building effective training programs and retaining top talent. From writing the perfect job description to integrating AI in your interview process, we’ve got it covered. If you’re ready to hire, train, and retain the best of the best, this episode is for you. Let’s face it—recruiting is no easy feat. The idea of integrating AI into the hiring process might seem a little out there, but trust me, it’s a game-changer. AI can help you sift through a sea of resumes, identifying candidates who truly stand out. This technology saves you time and helps eliminate unconscious bias, ensuring that you focus on candidates' skills and potential rather than strictly first impressions. Plus, tools like the Predictive Index can further enhance your hiring process by identifying candidates with the qualities and traits that align perfectly with your company’s needs, making the process more efficient and effective. Once you've secured those top talents, the real fun begins: training. Building a strong training program isn’t just about checking boxes; it’s about equipping your team with the skills and confidence to thrive in the long run. And let’s not forget about continuous development—whether it’s helping B-players rise to A-status or keeping your superstars engaged and growing, it’s of equal importance. Tune in to this week’s episode to learn what software we use to automate the creation of training manuals and onboarding programs. We also tackle the art of retention. It’s one thing to hire great people; it’s another to keep them motivated and inspired, to keep them coming back. In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to Savannah Schaffer, a dynamic business and mindset coach who has established a strong presence working with high-achieving women in the beauty industry. After leaving a six-figure job to start her own business following her pregnancy, she turned a potential setback into a launchpad for success. Savannah has mastered the art of leveraging social media, driving over $1 million in sales for a previous company, and now teaches others to harness that same power. Her approach is refreshingly authentic—she emphasizes the importance of consistency, personal branding, and sharing relatable content to build real connections with your audience. For Savannah, success on social media isn't about shortcuts; it's about showing up consistently and putting in the work. Mindset plays a crucial role in Savannah's coaching philosophy. She advocates for the transformative power of meditation and journaling, urging others to confront their fears and trauma, and to reprogram their minds to overcome the past. Her commitment to helping clients achieve both business success and personal growth is evident, and she derives great satisfaction from making a lasting impact that goes beyond financial results. Balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship, Savannah reflects on how her daughter has fueled her drive and achievements. Yet, she also speaks candidly about the challenges of maintaining a balance between her professional ambitions and personal life, as well as finding time for personal growth. Savannah’s story underscores the value of staying true to your path, blocking out distractions, and embracing personal growth, no matter how difficult it may be. Her coaching philosophy reflects this focus on accountability and dedication, prioritizing those ready to pursue change over trying to please those who aren’t open to it. This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with “Chatty” Patty Titcomb, a dynamic hospital administrator at HonorHealth by day and a passionate and successful food truck owner by night. Patty embodies the idea that when you truly love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work—even when you feel stretched thin. It is what it is because you created it and are making it happen! Patty's story begins with a leap of faith—launching a food truck to bring authentic Nigerian cuisine to Phoenix, a market that’s seen the influx of Ethiopian cuisine, but not Nigerian. As a new mom and newlywed, Patty’s venture wasn’t just about sharing a taste of her heritage; it was about seeing if Phoenix was ready for something fresh and exciting. What really sets Patty apart is her deep commitment to community. By exclusively hiring African and immigrant staff, she’s transformed her business into a platform that not only introduces new flavors but also uplifts and creates opportunities—and community—for those who share her roots. Patty faces many challenges, ups and downs in running her food truck, from handling maintenance and permits to marketing and educating her customers. But with an innovative mindset, she navigates these obstacles. By blending her healthcare background with her food truck business, she’s created something unique that goes beyond just serving food—it’s about nourishing her community. One of her strategies? Introducing customers to Nigerian cuisine with approachable dishes like Nigerian Tacos, which gradually opens their palates to richer, more authentic flavors. As we discuss her financial insights, Patty emphasizes the importance of understanding your market and the value of small financial institutions for securing loans such as a CDFI (Community Development Financial Institution). Patty shares how the CDFI helped her jumpstart business and why she keeps returning to the same well when it’s time to scale her business. She also shares the importance of mentorship, highlighting the guidance she received from local Arizona legends like Joe Johnston – the mastermind behind Agriptopia and Joe’s BBQ. Patty’s journey highlights resilience, innovation, and the rewards of pursuing what you love. Tune in to hear more about how she balances it all, her thoughts on maintaining work-life boundaries, and her vision for the future of her business. Melissa Rein Lively has a familiar face—and for good reason. You might remember her viral moment during the pandemic as she stormed into a Target to protest masks? That episode had her reputation and career on its way to the ‘pasture’, people were attempting to cancel her. If you ask Melissa—that experience was the best thing that happened to her and propelled her career and businesses more than it hurt them. But it didn’t start there.. Why wait? This week, we sat down with Dylan Capshaw, a Nickelodeon TIME Kid of the Year who transitioned from nonprofit founder to successful, teenage entrepreneur. Dylan’s journey from an online store to a vibrant brick-and-mortar business is both inspiring and insightful. As the founder of Stemistry—a unique business that pairs a coffee shop and floral studio—Dylan shares his experiences of launching a business with zero work experience and managing a team significantly older than him. Let’s dive in. Starting with a passion for coffee and flowers, Dylan cleverly combined these elements to create Stemistry. He began with an online store linked to a wildlife rescue and eventually scaled up to a physical location. Imagine being a 15-year-old and having your mom drop you off for job interviews with potential employees twice your age! This unique approach, while challenging, helped Dylan learn resilience and adaptability. One key takeaway from Dylan shares with us from his story is that making mistakes is part of the journey, and learning from them is crucial to growth. Managing people who are older and more experienced than you can be daunting, but Dylan navigates this with impressive ease. His strategies include leveraging local influencers, social media, and even hiring a publicist to boost his brand. In addition, the guidance and inspiration from mentors and celebrities like Mark Cuban and Sam Fox have influenced Dylan’s business strategy. What’s even more impressive? Dylan’s ability to balance being a student with running multiple businesses. It’s not just about managing time effectively; it’s about maintaining a high level of dedication and focus on both his educational and business ventures. Plus, his knack for staying adaptable with his business strategies is a huge part of why he's making such an impact. In this episode, we talk about how discipline and consistency are the absolute keys to success, why the average person lacks imagination, and why you should take your parent’s advice with a grain of salt. I sat down with the successful and inspiring Trevor Watters, CEO of Biomedic Consulting. We’re playing chess, not checkers—let’s dive in. Trevor’s journey began in the corporate world at LabCorp, where he quickly realized that the structured environment of corporate America wasn't for him. Trevor's entrepreneurial spirit led him to create Biomedic Consulting, where he could do things his way and provide a full spectrum of services that go beyond the constraints he previously faced. He believes in spotting opportunities where others see limitations and seizing them to fulfill his dreams. One of the standout moments of Trevor’s journey? He made a staggering $650,000 in just one week. How did he do it? By being a connector and putting himself in the right position. He emphasizes that doing something selflessly for someone else can come back tenfold. He shared with us his approach is all about networking and playing multiple chess pieces to create winning strategies. He’s not afraid to take risks, pivot, and tackle new challenges head-on. For Trevor, success isn't just about financial gain; it's about having the freedom to choose how to spend your time. Delaying gratification and prioritizing long-term success are other key pieces of his approach. He shared that fitness has played a crucial role in his life, instilling the discipline and consistency needed to thrive as an entrepreneur. His focus on mental health and personal growth shows that success is as much about mindset as it is about talent and skills.
