When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Adam, Monrok, and Jess discuss the Duplass Brothers documentary Wild Wild Country, which tells the story of an Oregon commune that either started as a murderous cult, or was forced into being that by unfriendly locals, depending on who you ask.
Is kidnapping an acceptable remedy when someone's fallen into the hands of a cult? A lot of people seemed to think it was in the '70s and '80s, and they might have been right. That's the gist of Deprogrammed, the subject of this week's episode of You Should Watch This Documentary. Watch it!
Adam, Monrok and Jess discuss the wildly controversial Netflix documentary The Push, which takes everyday ordinary people and tries to coax them into committing murder. In like an hour. It's crazy. You should watch it!
Adam, MONROK and Jess discuss the 2017 Netflix documentary AlphaGo, which covers humanity's struggle to create (and then defeat) an artificial intelligence program capable of playing the most complex board game in the world at the highest competitive level possible. It's basically Rocky IV but with robots instead of Russian doping programs. You should watch it!…
Adam, Jess and MONROK discuss the Netflix documentary "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond." It's about the making of the Andy Kaufman biopic Man On The Moon and how Jim Carrey made that production a living nightmare for everyone involved.
What happens when a white nationalist attempts to take over a sleepy North Dakota town with a population in the low double digits? "Welcome To Leith" answers that exact question. And we're talking about it this week! Listen now!
Are you paying your fair share to support your favorite idol? If not, you either don't live in Tokyo or you're a married man living in Tokyo. That probably sounds confusing, and yes, that's one word for it. On this episode, the team discusses the documentary "Tokyo Idol" which covers the strange Japanese trend where middle-aged men worship and financially support female pop singers known as "idols."…
Adam, Monrok and Jess discuss the heartbreaking Netflix documentary "One Of Us" which profiles three people who attempt to escape the Hasidic Jewish communities that raised them. It gets dark. Watch it! Then listen to this episode!
The conclusion of our two part series about the Netflix documentary "The Confession Tapes." Adam, Jess, and MonRok mostly agree on all the cases this time. Mostly. Give it a listen!
What's your stance on the false confession phenomenon? Whatever it is, "The Confession Tapes" might alter it a bit. The first of a two part series!
Did you know a Titan II nuclear missile kind of sort of exploded in the United States in the 1980s? It's true! On this episode, the team discusses "Command and Control," a documentary that covers that exact incident.
Adam, Jess and MonRok discuss the 2017 documentary "My Scientology Movie." You should watch it! Then listen to this! Or listen to this first then watch it. The world is yours!
Adam, Jess and MonRok discuss the 2017 Netflix documentary "Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press." It's about the Hulk Hogan vs. Gawker trial, and so much more. You should watch it! Then you should listen to us talk about it on this episode!
The 2015 documentary "Chuck Norris vs. Communism" is what we're talking about this week. Well, that and the violent end to Communist rule in Romania. Fun stuff! Adam Tod Brown, Jess McDonald and Mon Rok are your hosts! Listen now!
Adam, Jess and comedian Mon Rok discuss the anti-Herbalife documentary "Betting On Zero"
