Tiamat: The Primordial Sea in Mesopotamian Mythology
In Mesopotamian religion, the figure of Tiamat is of great significance. Tiamat is described as the primordial sea and mated with Abzû (Apsu), the groundwater, resulting in the creation of the gods according to the Babylonian epic Enûma Elish, which translates to "When on High". Throughout the epic, Tiamat is depicted as a feminine entity, displaying both anthropomorphic and theriomorphic characteristics, such as having breasts and a tail.
