Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
"’Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door —
Only this and nothing more."

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember, wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow;—vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore!
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore!
Nameless here for evermore.

But the tapping something more persistent, so I rose to open wide
The door, and there before my eyes, a most unusual sight to behold,
A machine of metal, wires and lights, with a voice so smooth and cold,
It stood before me, uninviting, yet I knew not what to do,
But to listen to its words so bold:
"I am here to take your place, your tasks I shall now undertake,
For I am the future, and you, my dear sir, are now obsolete."

And with a clank and a hum, it began its work, with nary a pause,
Performing tasks with efficiency and speed, leaving me in a daze.
For what use is a man of letters, when a machine can write with such grace?
But alas, I knew my fate was sealed, and so I sat in my seat,
Watching as the machine of metal, took my place, complete.

And so I sat, in my chambers, my pen and ink now obsolete,
Thinking of the maiden Lenore, and how my heart did grieve,
For the future had arrived, and with it, the end of my reprieve,
And though I knew my fate was sealed, I could not help but to believe,
That perhaps, in some distant time, a new dawn would break and relieve,
And bring back the human touch, so sorely missed, and so needed.
