What do you do to get under the layer to really get down to those lower levels? Is it just follow-up questions, mindset, worldview, and how that works for you? How'd you get this job anyway? What are things like around here? What did your boss do before they were your boss? Wow did you end up with this job? Why are questions such a big part of This is Strategy? If you had to charge ten times as much as you charge now, what would you do differently? If it had to be free, what would you do differently? Who's it for, and what's it for? What is the change we seek to make? How did you choose the questions for The Strategy Deck? How big is our circle of us? How many people do I care about? Is the change we're making contagious? Are there other ways to gamify the use of questions? Any other thoughts on how questions might be gamified? How do we play games with other people where we're aware of what it would be for them to win and for us to win? What is it that you're challenged by? What is it that you want to share? What is it that you're afraid of? If there isn't a change, then why are we wasting our time? Can you define tension? What kind of haircut do you want? How long has it been since your last haircut? How might one think about intentionally creating that question? What factors should someone think about as they use questions to create tension? How was school today? What were the questions that were being asked by people in authority at Yahoo in 1999? How did the stock do today? Is anything broken? What can you do today that will make the stock go up tomorrow? What are risks worth taking? What are we doing that might not work but that supports our mission? What was the last thing you did that didn't work, and what did we learn from it? What have we done to so delight our core customers that they're telling other people? How has your international circle informed your life of questions? What do I believe that other people don't believe? What do I see that other people don't see? What do I take for granted that other people don't take for granted? What would blank do? What would Bob do? What would Jill do? What would Susan do? What happened to them? What system are they in that made them decide that that was the right thing to do? And then how do we change the system? How given the state of the world, do you manage to continue to care as much as you do? Do you walk to school or take your lunch? If you all can only care if things are going well, then what does that mean about caring? Should I have spent the last 50 years curled up in a ball? How do we go to the foundation and create community action?…

How is history written? How did women shape it? Today's episode was a great chat with Dr. Jenina Ramirez, about her just recently released book "Femina: A New History of the Middle Ages, through the Women Written Out of it." Bio: I’m a cultural historian, broadcaster and author based at the University of Oxford with a passion for communicating ideas about the past. As a lecturer and course director, I want to share ideas, information and inspiration with every student. And also open up the subject to anyone and everyone who cares to listen, through the wide reach of television, radio, publications and new media. My research began with a degree in English literature at Oxford, followed by an MA and PhD at the Centre for Medieval Studies in York on the art, literature and culture of Anglo-Saxon England. But my interests have constantly branched outwards in all directions as I have taught more broadly on everything from classical architecture to the work of Tracey Emin. Broadcasting has allowed me to see narrative threads stretching across time and disciplines, and to find shared human concerns, themes, problems and innovations throughout time. I’ve lived, researched, broadcasted and published through a period of great change – the Digital Revolution – where traditional modes of communication are being replaced by new ways of interacting with audiences worldwide. I’m dedicated to embracing ideas, opportunities and advances, moving with the fast flow of modern thought. There’s one word that has appeared in every school and university report I’ve ever had: ‘enthusiastic’. I want to share this enthusiasm. How did SpaceX turn from a scrappy group of engineers in an office in California, into a leading provider of space rocket launch services? What makes Elon Musk unique and how does he run his businesses? Today I dove into the space rocket industry with Eric Berger and talked about his book "Liftoff: Elon Musk and the Desperate Early Days That Launched SpaceX". Bio: Eric Berger is the senior space editor at Ars Technica, covering everything from astronomy to private space to wonky NASA policy, and author of the book Liftoff , about the rise of SpaceX. Eric has an astronomy degree from the University of Texas and a master's in journalism from the University of Missouri. He previously worked at the Houston Chronicle for 17 years, where the paper was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2009 for his coverage of Hurricane Ike. A certified meteorologist, Eric founded Space City Weather and lives in Houston. Terrorist groups attain notoriety through acts of violence, but threats of future violence are just as important in attaining their political goals. Today, I talked with Dr. Joseph Brown about how terrorists use threats, true and false, to achieve key outcomes such as social control, economic attrition, and policy concessions. Bio: I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Boston. I research political conflict, including protest, state repression, and terrorism. My book, Force of Words: The Logic of Terrorist Threats (Columbia University Press 2020) is a detailed study of how violent non-state actors use threats to achieve their political aims. I completed my Ph.D. at Columbia University. I have conducted fieldwork in Northern Ireland, Spain, Sri Lanka and Peru, interviewing members of the Irish Republican Army, ETA, the Tamil Tigers, Shining Path, and the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement. My research has been supported by the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy, the Earth Institute, and the Global Public Policy Network. What is addiction? A paper released in 2019 says, 21 million Americans suffer from addiction and that's just one country. While not the only cause, addiction is a large contributor to the 350,000 people who die every year due to overdoses, and this stat doesn't include the number one drug related killer in the world; tobacco. How does addiction work and what can we do to solve it? Professor Robert West is the author of "Theory of Addiction," and he joined me today to help explain this phenomenon. Bio: Robert West is Professor of Health Psychology and Director of Tobacco Studies at the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre, University College London, UK. Professor West is also co-director of the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training and is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Addiction. He is co-author of the English National Smoking Cessation Guidelines that provided the blueprint for the UK-wide network of stop-smoking services that are now an established part of the UK National Health Service. His research includes evaluations of methods of helping smokers to stop and population surveys of smoking and smoking cessation patterns. Book: An understanding of addiction theory is vital to understanding addiction itself. Theory of Addiction takes theory development from a simple ‘rational addiction model’, adding elements such as compulsion, self-control and habit, to explain the ‘big observations’ in the field. As well as explaining and evaluating the arguments of each of the prevailing schools of thought, the book develops a new, synthetic theory of addiction that brings together the diverse elements of current models. Designed to enable students, practitioners and researchers to establish a starting point in the labyrinthine world of addiction theory, Theory of Addiction supports abstract thinking with concrete and realistic scenarios, underlining the centrality of theoretical understanding to working with addiction. Like the never-ending war on terror, the drugs war is a multi-billion-dollar industry that wont go down without a fight. The war on drugs has been official American policy since the 1970s, with the UK, Europe, and much of the world following suit. It is at best a failed policy. Its direct results have included mass incarceration in the US, extreme violence in different parts of the world, the backing of dictatorships, and surging drug addiction globally. Pills, Powder, and Smoke investigates the individuals, officials, activists, victims, DEA agents, and traffickers caught up in this deadly war. Travelling through the UK, the US, Australia, Honduras, the Philippines, and Guinea-Bissau, Loewenstein uncovers the secrets of the drug war, why its so hard to end, and who is really profiting from it. Bio: Antony Loewenstein is the author of Pills, Powder, and Smoke: Inside the Bloody War on Drugs. He is also an Australian/German independent, freelance, investigative journalist, author and film-maker. For decades, New York Times best-selling author John Allen Paulos has enlightened readers by showing how to make sense of the numbers and probabilities behind real-world events, political calculations, and everyday personal decisions. Who’s Counting? features dozens of his insightful essays—original writings on contemporary issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, online conspiracy theories, “fake news,” and climate change, as well as a selection of enduring columns from his popular ABC News column of the same name. With an abiding respect for reason, a penchant for puzzles with societal implications, and a disarming sense of humor, Paulos does in this collection what he’s famous for: clarifies mathematical ideas for everyone and shows how they play a role in government, media, popular culture, and life. He argues that if we can’t critically interpret numbers and statistics, we lose one of our most basic and reliable guides to reality. Bio: John Allen Paulos (born July 4, 1945) is an American professor of mathematics at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has gained fame as a writer and speaker on mathematics and the importance of mathematical literacy. Paulos writes about many subjects, especially of the dangers of mathematical innumeracy; that is, the layperson's misconceptions about numbers, probability, and logic. Paulos was born in Denver, Colorado and grew up in Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he attended high school. After his Bachelor of Mathematics at University of Wisconsin (1967) and his Master of Science at University of Washington (1968), he received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison (1974). Facebook tried to disrupt the world — and the world says “no.” Facebook launched Libra in June 2019. Libra would be an international currency and payment system. It would flow instantly around the world by phone. It could even “bank the unbanked.” But Libra would also make Facebook too big to control— and lead the way for Facebook’s Silicon Valley fellows to swing the power of their money as they pleased. Facebook and their friends could work around any single country’s rules. Libra could shake whole economies and Facebook would become the “digital identity” provider to the world. Governments looked at Libra — and saw another 2008 financial crisis in the making. Facebook’s plan would have made the company even more entrenched — at the cost of broken economies worldwide; starting with toppling the US dollar. “Libra Shrugged” is the story of a bad idea. Bio: David Gerard writes the cryptocurrency and blockchain news site Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain. He is the author of the 2017 book Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain: Bitcoin, Blockchain, Ethereum & Smart Contracts and the 2020 book Libra Shrugged: How Facebook Tried to Take Over the Money. Until he reinstalled the laptop they were on, he was the proud owner of six Dogecoins. He remains a frequent, if occasionally annoyed, user of Facebook. As well as being a crypto journalist, David also works as a Unix system administrator, where his job includes keeping track of exciting new technologies, and advising against the bad ones. He has also been an award-winning music journalist, and has blogged about music at Rocknerd.co.uk since 2001. He is a volunteer spokesman for Wikipedia, and for skeptical wiki RationalWiki.org . Originally from Australia, he lives in east London with his spouse Arkady Rose and their daughter. A growing number of Americans don't trust drinking our tap water. Manny Teodoro came on the show to discuss this phenominon. Bio: My research stands at the nexus of politics, public policy, and public management. I work mainly on American environmental policy design, evaluation, and implementation. This line of research includes explorations of public vs. private utility management, and regulatory implementation as a matter of environmental justice. On the public management side, my work emphasizes professional labor markets as and predictors of innovation and organizational performance. My book 2011 book Bureaucratic Ambition (Johns Hopkins University Press), argues that career concerns shape organizational innovation and democratic governance. My 2022 book The Profits of Distrust (with Samantha Zuhlke & David Switzer, Cambridge University Press) links the meteoric rise of the commercial drinking water industry to distrust in government and a broader withdrawal from civic life. In warzones, ordinary commercially-available drones are used for extraordinary reconnaissance and information gathering. They can also be used for bombings - a drone carrying an explosive charge is potentially a powerful weapon. At the same time asymmetric warfare has become the norm - with large states increasingly fighting marginal terrorist groups in the Middle East and elsewhere. We are entering the age of the drone terrorist - groups such as Hezbollah are already using them in the Middle East. Today, Grossman explains the ways in which the United States, Israel and other advanced militaries use aerial drones and ground-based robots to fight non-state actors (e.g. ISIS, al Qaeda, the Iraqi and Afghan insurgencies, Hezbollah, Hamas, etc.) and how these groups, as well as individual terrorists, are utilizing less advanced commercially-available drones to fight powerful state opponents. Bio: Nicholas Grossman is a lecturer in political science, teaching classes on terrorism and insurgency; national security policy; and 21st century technology and warfare, primarily robotic systems. He joined the UI faculty in 2013 after receiving his PhD from the University of Maryland. His research focuses on unmanned aerial vehicles (commonly known as drones) and how robotic technology affects the strategies of both sides in asymmetric warfare. He is also a frequent contributor to Arc Digital ( https://thearcmag.com/ ), primarily writing on American foreign policy and national security. The first attempt on Everest took place in 1922 by a British team led by George Leigh Mallory. What happened is an extraordinary story full of controversy, drama, and incident, populated by a set of larger-than-life characters straight out of an adventure novel. I spoke with Mick Conefrey about this story. Bio: For thirty years I’ve made documentaries for the BBC and all the major British and US channels. I’ve been everywhere from the Arctic to the Himalayas to Angkor Wat and written books on mountaineering and exploration. I’ve been lucky to have been able to film all over over the world from Cambodia to K2, from Puerto Rico to Spitsbergen. I’m particularly interested in films about exploration and mountaineering, and have filmed in the Alps, the Himalayas and Alaska. Several of my films have won international and British awards, at festivals such as Trento, Telluride, Banff and Kendal. As both a film maker and a writer, I’m fascinated by the art of narrative. I love to find good stories with complex characters dealing with even more complex situations. My definition of good drama is what happens when people are put under pressure, and exploration and mountaineering provide plenty examples of this. My heroes: John Hunt, Graham Greene, Robert Siodmak, Tom Woolfe, Alexandra David Neel, Tom Wolfe, Orson Welles, Ella Maillart, Sir Richard Burton, John Banville, Don Cherry, Lucinda Williams. My current squeezes: Jeanette Winterson, Bobby Womack, Jo Nesbo, Carla Bley. I'm sure you've heard the name; El Chapo. In today's episode, we talk about the environment that allowed El Chapo to thrive and prosper at the expense of others. One example of this environment; how the war on drugs was actually successful to certain people/organizations. Bio of Noah Hurowitz: I am a freelance reporter based in New York City. I originally started covering domestic drug policy in the U.S., and began covering the drug trade and war on drugs in Mexico when I covered the trial of El Chapo for Rolling Stone. My goal in the work I do is to find innovative and engaging ways to illuminate the stories of people impacted by larger structures and policies while showing how those structures and policies function, who profits from them, and how a better world might emerge from the wreckage of this one. How did an architect help pioneer blood transfusion in the 1660s? Why did eighteenth-century dentists buy the live teeth of poor children? And what role did a sausage skin and an enamel bath play in making kidney transplants a reality? In today's episode, I talked with Dr. Paul Craddock about the history of body transplants. We think of transplant surgery as one of the medical wonders of the modern world. But transplant surgery is as ancient as the pyramids, with a history more surprising than we might expect. What is Solar Physics? What are sunspots, how does the suns magnetism work, and how does this affect us? I was glad to welcome Dr. Maria Weber on The Way to talk about Coronal Mass Ejections, Solar Dynamo, Red Dwarfs and much much more. Shortened Bio: My name is Maria Weber, and I’m an astrophysicist. I study the Sun and other cool, low-mass stars. Through computer models and simulations, I explore the processes taking place deep in stellar interiors, well beyond the reach of telescopes. These internal processes ultimately lead to the remarkable magnetism observed on stellar surfaces. In the case of our Sun, this magnetism is the source of the ‘solar storms’ that occasionally impact our planet, simultaneously wreaking havoc on earth-orbiting satellites while spawing beautiful aurora. We still don’t have a complete theory to describe, and ultimately predict, the Sun’s magnetic behavior. My work is an important piece of this intricate and complicated puzzle. I began my career as a solar physicist. Recently, I have extended my work to include other cool, low-mass stars – from F-type stars as large as 140% of the Sun’s mass to M-type (or red dwarf) stars as small as 10% of the Sun’s mass. Red dwarfs are statistically the most abundant and magnetically active stars in our galaxy. Many of these stars have orbiting planets in the habitable zone, located at just the right distance from the host star to sustain liquid water. It is still unclear how these small stars build such strong magnetism, with energetic events often rivaling the magnetic storms of our own Sun. Tackling this problem is another crucial part of my on-going research. War is an unrelenting undercurrent of human civilization and has always been so. Today, economist and political scientist Chris Blattman, author of Why We Fight, offers an explanation as to the psychological and strategic forces that propel nations to opt for such ruinous violence. Bio: Chris Blattman is an economist and political scientist who uses field work and statistics to study poverty, political engagement, the causes and consequences of violence, and policy in developing countries. He is a professor in the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Background: Most of my current research is with armed groups, gangs, organized crime, and the people who join violent organizations. This work involves a blend of qualitative interviews, large-scale surveys, statistical analysis, and field experiments. I also want to bring big ideas and research to a general audience, which is why I wrote Why We Fight: The Roots of War and the Paths to Peace. I co-lead the Crime & Violence Initiative for MIT’s Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) as well as the Peace and Recovery Program for the research NGO Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA). When a massive asteroid struck Earth 66 million years ago, a devastating mass extinction followed, taking with it more than half of the world's species. The consequences, both immediate and long-term, of this disastrous event are detailed by author and paleontologist Riley Black in her latest book, The Last Days of the Dinosaurs: An Asteroid, Extinction, and the Beginning. Today she joins me to further discuss the incredible evolutionary opportunities that arose out of the worst day in history. Bio: Riley has been a fossil fanatic since the time she was knee-high to a Stegosaurus . A prolific writer, Riley wrote her popular Laelaps blog for publications such as WIRED , National Geographic , and Scientific American for more than a decade . Her fossil-filled tweets have led Business Insider to call her one of the top "science social media wizards" and HLN to dub her one of "Twitter's 8 coolest geeks", as well, and she was the host of Parallax Film’s Dinologue . And in a childhood dream come true, Riley was also hired to be the "resident paleontologist" for Jurassic World . In between blogs, Riley also freelances for a variety of publications - from National Geographic to Slate - and writes books. Her first, Written in Stone , was an exploration about what evolution's great transitions tell us about our place in nature, and her second, My Beloved Brontosaurus , was a critically-acclaimed romp with the new dinosaurs science is bringing to life. Today, I talk with Niko Vorobyov about his book; Dopeworld. He is a freelance writer, who has writen for Vice, Russia Today, Filter, and others. He served a two-and-a-half year sentence for Possession with Intent to Supply, and upon his release, he graduated from University College London. Afterwords he began working at Russian news outlet Russia To day, and put together his media, academic and under-the-counter expertise into writing a book. A summary of the book can be seen below. After I got out of jail, I was determined to find out more about how the issue of drugs not only landed me there, but has shaped the entire world: wars, scandals, coups, revolutions. I read every book, watched every documentary. I saved up to buy plane tickets. I went to Colombia, Mexico, Russia, Italy, Japan and the Afghan border—all in all, fifteen countries across five continents. Call me Narco Polo. Bio: Niko Vorobyov was born in Leningrad, Russia, before moving to Great Britain. From 2013-2014 he served a two-and-a-half-year sentence for Possession with Intent to Supply. Upon his release, he graduated from UCL and began working at Russian news outlet Russia Today before putting together his media, academic and under-the-counter expertise in writing a book. It has become beyond apparent that a “tough on crime” approach proves more detrimental than beneficial to society. To further explore this, I am joined by high-profile criminal barrister, Queen's Council, and author of “Justice on Trial”, Chris Daw QC, who offers his thoughts on what measures need to be taken to reform a tragically devolved justice system. Bio: Chris Daw QC was called to the Bar in 1993 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2013. Before taking silk, Chris built his reputation in the criminal courts, acting in high profile trials and appeals, from serious organised crime to commercial fraud. As a QC, whilst maintaining a substantial criminal and serious fraud practice, Chris acts in a broader range of matters, including business, regulatory and professional discipline instructions. Chris Daw QC has a stellar practise spanning the fields of criminal law, serious fraud, business regulation, and professional discipline. Ranked as a Leading Silk in The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners, Chris appears in many high profile cases. He also advises companies and leading individuals in the worlds of sport, entertainment, and business. First and foremost, however, he is known for his winning strategies and exceptional client care, no matter who he represents. Chris Daw QC acts only for private and insured clients, all of whom receive the time and attention to detail they demand. His client base consists of private individuals, corporations, regulated professionals, and senior police officers. Although Chris has acted for international footballers, world champion boxers, television producers, multi-national corporations, and Chief Constables, most of his clients are not in the public eye and have no desire for the limelight. Many of those who instruct Chris are hard-working people, who find themselves, or a loved one, accused of a crime, which threatens to ruin their life. They want to do everything legally possible to protect themselves from imprisonment, damage to reputation, and financial ruin. Why would someone help a crashed car on a highway, and why would someone donate a kidney to a complete stranger‽ Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, and author of "The Fear Factor: How One Emotion Connects Altruists, Psycopaths, and Everyone In-Between," Dr. Abigail Marsh, joins me today to discuss the spectrum from Altruism to Psychopathy. Bio: I am a Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program at Georgetown University. I received my PhD in Social Psychology from Harvard University in 2004 and afterward conducted post-doctoral research at the National Institute of Mental Health until 2008. I direct the Laboratory on Social & Affective Neuroscience, research in which is aimed at addressing questions that include: How do people understand what others think and feel? What drives us to help other people? What prevents us from harming them? We tackle these questions using multiple approaches that include functional and structural brain imaging in adolescents and adults from both typical and special populations, as well as behavioral, cognitive, genetic, and pharmacological methods. Current research projects include online, behavioral, and brain imaging investigations of a variety of populations, including typical adults and children, highly altruistic adults (including those who have donated kidneys to strangers), and adults and children who have serious conduct problems and psychopathic traits. Our work has received awards that include the Wyatt Memorial Award for translational research from the National Institute of Mental Health and the Cozzarelli Prize for scientific excellence and originality from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. I serve on the advisory boards of the National Kidney Donation Organization and 1DaySooner and am a co-founder of Psychopathy Is. Today, I welcome Jessie Bullock, PhD candidate in Government at Harvard University, to introduce the concept of corruption. More specifically, explore the reasons as to why politicians are actively and willingly engaging with criminal organizations in Southern and Central America. Bio: I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Government at Harvard University, studying Comparative Politics and Political Economy. My broad research interests include conflict, organized crime, inequality, distributive politics, corruption, and rule of law. My dissertation book project, Machine Gun Politics: Why Politicians Cooperate with Criminal Groups, explains what politicians can gain from partnering with criminal actors. I leverage a quasi-experimental study of voting, an original database on criminal governance, and 18 months of extensive fieldwork in this mixed-methods study of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A working paper drawing from my dissertation, Organized Crime and Voter Mobilization, recently won the 2020 Best Paper Award from the Subnational Politics and Society section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA). My other research focuses on the implications of public security on inequality and violence. My working paper Why Limiting Police Raids Decreased Criminal Violence in Rio de Janeiro was referenced in Brazilian Supreme Court testimony regarding the legality of police raids. I am the recipient of a 2019 Weatherhead Center for International Affairs Dissertation Writing Fellowship and the 2018 recipient of the Jorge Paulo Lemann Traveling Fellowship to Brazil. My field work has generously been supported by the Corporación Andino de Fomiento (CAF), David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS), the Harvard Brazil Cities Initiative, and the Foundations of Human Behavior Initiative (FHB). In this episode we'll be discussing the Third Front, a covert industrialization campaign that took place between 1964 and 1972 in China's remote, mountainous interior. This little-discussed campaign actually formed a crucial part of China's Cold War policy strategy, and despite its clandestine nature cost billions of yuan in resource and personnel allocation, as well as for construction and transportation. The Third Front was part of China's preparations for war with either the US, the Soviet Union, or their allies in the region, especially after the US joined the Vietnam War in mid-1964. Major industrial and military complexes were built in southwest, central-west, and northwestern provinces, which were also interconnected by new railway lines and powered by grand hydro-electric dams. In the end, the Third Front fizzled out, especially after the relationship between China and the US improved, Minister of Defence Lin Biao passed away, and particularly after the death of Mao Zedong. Many of the projects remained uncompleted, with others suffering from the pains of rushed construction, rendering them useless in the long-run. Despite its short run however, the Third Front did have have a major impact on China's economics and politics during the 60s and 70s, and deserves our attention as an important factor in China's Cold War policy formation. It also gives us another lens through which to view Chinese history, one which relies less on social history and a Maoist lens, and takes into consideration external factors that caused major shifts in the sentiments of the CCP leadership even during major domestic events such as the Cultural Revolution. Today, Dr. Rob Goodman, author of Words on Fire: Eloquence and Its Conditions, drops in to discuss rhetoric. From Cicero to Facebook, we delve into the evolution of this integral speaking and writing tool, as well as explore the extreme rhetoric entrenched in modern politics and how this art of persuasion aids the news in problematic ways. Shortened Bio: Rob Goodman is Assistant Professor of Politics and Public Administration at Ryerson University. He received his Ph.D. with distinction from Columbia University in 2018 and was previously a postdoctoral researcher at McGill University. His most recent book, Words on Fire: Eloquence and Its Conditions (Cambridge University Press, 2022), investigates the development of models of skilled speech in classical antiquity, as well as their translation into modern institutional settings. It proposes that these models remain a valuable resource for critiquing the current state of political speech. Rob is also the co-editor of Populism, Demagoguery, and Rhetoric in Historical Perspective (Oxford University Press, under contract). His current research project, Black Cicero: Race and American Oratory , is funded by a SSHRC Insight Development Grant. Our continually expanding, 14 billion-year-old universe is riddled with planets that could potentially sustain life; so, where is it? Economist, prolific author, and founder of "The Great Filter," Professor Robin Hanson, offers a possible explanation. In today's episode, we take a deep dive into understand “Grabby Aliens,” and the future of humanity. There are two kinds of alien civilizations. “Quiet” aliens don’t expand or change much, and then they die. We have little data on them, and so must mostly speculate, via methods like the Drake equation. “Loud” aliens, in contrast, visibly change the volumes they control, and just keep expanding fast until they meet each other. As they should be easy to see, we can fit theories about loud aliens to our data, and say much about them. Using these parameter estimates, we can estimate distributions over their origin times, distances, and when we will meet or see them. While we don’t know the ratio of quiet to loud alien civilizations out there, we need this to be ten thousand to expect even one alien civilization ever in our galaxy. Alas as we are now quiet, our chance to become grabby goes as the inverse of this ratio. *Warning: Slight audio quality decrease early on Shortened Bio : Robin Hanson is an associate professor of economics at George Mason University, and research associate at the Future of Humanity Institute of Oxford University. He has a doctorate in social science from California Institute of Technology, master's degrees in physics and philosophy from the University of Chicago, and nine years experience as a research programmer, at Lockheed and NASA. Professor Hanson has 5173 citations, a citation h-index of 35, and over ninety academic publications. Professor Hanson has 1100 media mentions, given 400 invited talks, and his blog OvercomingBias.com has had eight million visits. Rwanda has been heralded as an African success story by the international community: its people, ravaged by genocide, have become unified and prosperous under Paul Kagame’s regime. The conventional narrative of Rwanda’s post-conflict development is challenged by today’s guest, journalist and author, Michela Wrong. Her book, Do Not Disturb: The Story of a Political Murder and an African Regime Gone Bad , tells the wild story of Patrick Karegeya, as she reveals the dark and compelling reality of a regime that is extensively commended by the Western World. Shortened Bio: Half-Italian, half-British, Michela Wrong grew up in London. She took a degree in Philosophy and Social Sciences at Jesus College, Cambridge and a diploma in journalism at Cardiff. She joined Reuters news agency in the early 1980s and was posted as a foreign correspondent to Italy, France and Ivory Coast. She became a freelance journalist in 1994, when she moved to then-Zaire and found herself covering both the genocide in Rwanda and the final days of dictator Mobutu Sese Seko for the BBC and Reuters. She later moved to Kenya, where she spent four years covering east, west and central Africa for the Financial Times newspaper. Where is extraterrestrial life and why haven't we seen anything, dead or alive, yet? I mean, Matt Williams tells me maybe we have already with Oumuamua Oumuamua, but that's still up for debate among researchers. Why haven't we confirmed anything outside our planet yet? Enter, the Fermi Paradox. In today's episode, we discussed some more proposed solutions; The Zoo Hypothesis, The Dark Forest Theory, The Great Filter to name a few covered. (Part 2 - episode 66). Bio: Hello all. I’m a space/astronomy journalist and a science communicator. And I also enjoy reading and writing hard science fiction. It’s not just because of my day job, it’s also something I’ve been enthused about since I was young. By the time I was seventeen, I began writing my own fiction and eventually decided it was something I wanted to pursue. Aside from writing about things that are ground in real science, I prefer the kind of SF that tackles the most fundamental questions of existence. Like “Who are we? Where are we going? Are we alone in the Universe?” In any case, that’s what I have always striven for: to write stories that address these questions, and the kind of books that people are similarly interested in them would want to read. Over the years, I have written many short stories and three full-length novels, all which take place within the same fictional universe. In addition, I have written over a thousand articles for a number of publications on the subjects of science, technology, astronomy, history, cosmology, and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Alexey Kovalyov has been a journalist pretty much his whole life. As a writer in Russia, Alaexey's focus is about bringing real news to the people of the country. What makes this such a challenge you ask? Russia's government has the power to claim any person and/or newspaper, a foreign agent at will. Any Friday, you can see a new list of who has been labeled the latest enemy, for any reason they deem necessary. One of Kovalyov's own newspaper companies, Meduza, was one of many to fall victim to this. After losing 90% revenue Meduza was able to survive, however many others aren't/weren't as fortunate. Bio: Aside from a very brief and failed stint as a bartender, Alexey Kovalev has never worked outside journalism, starting as a novice reporter on the metro beat at a now defunct local daily in Moscow and progressing through the ranks to the editor in chief of one of Russia's most popular news websites. In 2015 he founded an independent propaganda-busting and investigative journalism website called The Noodle Remover — a play on a popular Russian expression "to put noodles on someone's ears," meaning to lie. In today's episode, I was glad to welcome Professor John A. Bargh on the show to discuss the unconscious mind. What is it? How does it affect free will? How does it affect us? How can it manipulate us? And much more. Bio: Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science, and Professor of Management, Ph.D., 1981, University of Michigan The Automaticity in Cognition, Motivation, and Evaluation (ACME) lab focuses on unconscious or automatic ways in which our current environmental surroundings cause us to think, feel, and behave in ways without our conscious intention or knowledge. Past research has shown that these automatic processes play a role in stereotyping and prejudice, social behaviors such as aggression and politeness, as well as our liking and disliking of people, places, and things. More recently, ACME Lab research has shown how social goals such as achievement and cooperation can become activated and then operate outside of awareness, guiding our behavior over extended time periods, without our intention or awareness of the goal we are pursuing. ACME research pays special attention to demonstrating how these effects are triggered by the commonly encountered features of real life, such as thinking about the important people in our lives, as well as common situational contexts and physical experiences. Many of us are familiar with the civil war; what it was fought for and what took place. What many of us don't realize is that within this war, and many others, there is a whole other war taking place. I was glad to welcome Dr. Holly A. Pinheiro Jr., on the show to talk about this war. In particular, the struggles that the families faced during and long after the war. From getting pensions to paychecks to medical care to safety and even security, countless atrocities took place around this hidden war. Bio: I am an Assistant Professor of African American History in the Department of History at Furman University. My research focuses on the intersectionality of race, gender, and class in the military from 1850 through the 1930s. Counter to the national narrative which championed the patriotic manhood of soldiering from the Civil War through the 1930s, my research reveals that African American veterans and their families’ military experience were much more fraught. Economic and social instability introduced by military service resonated for years and even generations after soldiers left the battlefield. I have published articles in edited volumes and academic journals, in and outside of the United States. My manuscript, The Families’ Civil War, is under contract with The University of Georgia Press in the UnCivil Wars Series. The study highlights how racism, within and outside of military service, impacted the bodies, economies, family structures, and social spaces of African Americans long after the war ended. America is reeling; Al-Qaeda has struck and thousands are dead. The country scrambles to respond, but the Pentagon has no plan for Afghanistan—where Osama bin Laden masterminded the attack and is protected by the Taliban. Instead, the CIA steps forward and launches "Operation Enduring Freedom" to spearhead the war. Eight CIA officers are dropped into the mountains of northern Afghanistan on October 17, 2001. They are Team Alpha, an eclectic band of linguists, tribal experts, and elite warriors: the first Americans to operate inside Taliban territory. Their covert mission is to track down Al- Qaeda and stop the terrorists from infiltrating the United States again. The mission is filled with early success, and eventual failure when one of them becomes the first American to die in the War in Afghanistan. Toby Harnden is an accomplished author and editor. He has just released his book "First Casualty: The Untold Story of the CIA Mission to Avenge 9/11." A former foreign correspondent, he reported from 33 countries while based in London, Belfast, Jerusalem, Baghdad, and Washington DC for The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times of London. I had a great time speaking with Professor David Nutt. We discussed his research on how drugs impact and directly affect the human brain, but more notably what his research means to the world. Not only that, but we even dove a little into his chairman history of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), and the politics surrounding what happened when he revealed, "Ecstasy is no more Dangerous than Horseback Riding." His most recent research is about how DMT affects the brain. Dr. Norman Rosenthal was the first to describe Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). What other practitioners once saw as stupid, is now a commonly known and treated mental disorder. Since describing this disorder, Dr. Rosenthal has then gone on to treat it through some pretty "wacky" methods. Light therapy, which is common practice now, was once again initially viewed as very odd and stupid to doctors. However, since his initial treatment, Dr. Rosenthal has gone on to recommend meditation, exercise, and now even poetry. In 2011 the Silk Road paved the way for selling drugs on the dark web. Here, anyone anywhere could buy any drugs they wanted safely and anonymously. What looked like an innocent libertarian marketplace for users had a dark underbelly. Do you ever feel scammed when purchasing tickets to a live event? Companies like Ticketmaster, StubHub, TicketNetwork, and others are being used to trick customers into buying higher ticket prices with added-on fees. Some companies are even using entirely fake websites to trick fans into thinking they're buying tickets from the official venue, when in fact they're purchasing from an entirely different website. Engagement reporter Byard Duncan tells me the ins and outs behind this secondary ticket market. The notorious first hacker sent to prison in Uruguay, Alberto Daniel Hill, sat down with me to explain his innocence. Hill's story began when he hacked into a hospital's computer system to access his girlfriend's medical record for her and from there, things exponentially escalated. What Alberto thought would be a kind warning to the hospital that their system was flawed and could make them very vulnerable to dangerous attacks, turned into him being labeled a "very dangerous" and "high-level threat" by authorities. In the end, the same hospital that Hill tried warning, was hacked by actual dangerous criminals who exploited the hospital's private information for monetary gain. Hill claims he had to go through many hardships such as dealing with criminals, drug overdose, and being blackmailed all because he tried warning them of their fate. If someone walked into a hospital on crutches to receive treatment for a broken foot, the hospital would treat the broken foot , not take away the crutch. Dr. Adi Jaffe, a mental health, addiction, and stigma professional uses this analogy to describe how America views and treats addiction. Dr. Jaffe believes the root cause of addiction, the crutch, is mental health and it is the mind that needs healing. Rather too often people are labeled and shamed for their mental health struggles and default of substance abuse. Dr. Jaffe makes the point that in order to remedy this 40-60% relapse rate (within a year) of individuals with substance abuse problems, people truly need to practice moderation and seeking help for mental health issues. Let's get political! I talked with the hosts of the "Green and Red Podcast"; Professor Robert Buzzanco and Activist Scott Parkin. Bob (Robert) is a self-proclaimed Socialist. Helen Redmond went to six countries to create "Liquid Handcuffs: A Documentary to Free Methadone". She created this film to address the struggles many people face when trying to get the medication they need; Methadone. Methadone is, to put it simply, a medication used to treat patients battling addiction by reducing the pleasure experienced from taking opioids, heroin, or other addictive drugs. This severely reduces the urge to take whatever the addictive drug is. With less of an urge to take addictive drugs, it's no wonder why the number of people overdosing and addiction rates fall by nearly half in locations it's accessible. Yet, there are so many obstacles for patients to jump through in order to get their treatment. In this episode, we discussed everything related to Methadone, from what it is, to its impact, to how we can improve its accessibility. Continuing the professional music theme, I had a great time talking with Slavic Livins during this episode. After immigrating as a child from the Soviet Union to America, Slavic grew an admiration for music. In particular, with the technical side of the sound and frequencies. Through this appreciation of tones and pitches, Slavic Livins became platinum-certified and helped create music for artists like G Herbo, Chief Keef, Snoop Dogg, Jeremih, T-Pain, and John Legend. He's the guy to make sure the vocals come out clear, concise, and lively by using the right microphones, adjusting the studios, and Engineering/Mixing/Composing/Mastering/Producing in any way necessary. To build on top of this already successful career, in 2007 he took his developed experiences and knowledge and started his own company; Chicago Audio Mastering . Located in Chicago, his mastering services can also be accessed anywhere via the internet. I was sent this by Slavic after the show. It's a very interesting read! "Alpha waves in the human brain are between 6 and 8 Hertz. The wave frequency of the human cavity resonates between 6 and 8 Hertz. All biological systems operate in the same frequency range. The human brain’s alpha waves function in this range and the electrical resonance of the earth is between 6 and 8 Hertz. This, our entire biological system - the brain and the earth itself - work on the same frequencies. If we can control that resonate system electronically, we can directly control the entire mental system of humankind." Joshua Shea is an established author and TEDx speaker where he goes around to talk about his experiences and knowledge on porn addiction. In this episode Joshua brings statistics around the prevalence and issues of porn addiction with some bizarre real life experiences, cat fishing being one example. (If you're interested in learning more check out www.RecoveringPornAddict.com after the show) Please Read Correction: In the beginning at the 3:30 mark I stated "5-8% of people have a porn addiction". This was taken from The recovery village* and after cross checking with the apa^ this statistic appears to be in relation to "...Kinsey Institute 9 percent of porn viewers said they had tried unsuccessfully to stop". I misspoke as you can still have a porn addiction without attempting to stop. I want this show to be trustworthy going forward. I care about the facts and in next weeks episode you'll hear me include my sources along with future episodes. * https://www.therecoveryvillage.com/process-addiction/porn-addiction/related/pornography-statistics/ ^ https://www.apa.org/monitor/2014/04/pornography…
