Episode#52: A Deep Dive into Mark 3:5 with Jennifer Elwood
Manage episode 372959064 series 3291282
During last week’s episode with Carolyn Rice, we discussed her Bible study Healing the Father Wound: A Women's Bible Study through the Gospel of Mark. The passage in Scripture that came up as we spoke was the story of the withered hand from Mark 3:5: “He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored” (NIV).
So, I decided this verse needed a deep dive. I talked about:
- The broader context of this story
- Take a look at two pictures of the synagogue in Capernaum here and here. The dark foundation is the ruin of the 1st century synagogue.
- So. Many. Definitions. The words of this verse go deep and so, I opened them up.
- I read several translations of this verse, including my own paraphrase.
- I shared some commentary, including a passage from my friend Dennis Cornish’s book Matthew: A Parascriptural Gospel Narrative
- Conclusion of what we learn about God and my own personal takeaways
