Do you find joy in your relationship with others? Welcome to the Parable Podcast, today I would love to share one of my recent messages from our home church as we take a little holiday break here at the Parable Podcast.

First, let me say thank you! When you have so many options to choose from, thank you so much for being a listener. 2023 has been a great year and I have been so encouraged by all of these stories. Please enjoy this message wherever it may find you today.

What happens if joy is not separate from pain? What if joy and pain are fundamentally tangled up with one another? Or even more to the point, what if joy is not only entangled with pain or suffering, or sorrow, but is also what emerges from how we care for each other through those things? What if joy, instead of refuge or relief from heartbreak, is what [bursts forth] from us as we help each other carry our heartbreaks? - Inciting Joy by Ross Gay

Sermon Notes

  • Choosing joy changes our relationship with others.
  • Happiness is how you feel when good things happen to you.
  • Joy is an attitude and way of life that you choose despite what happens to you.
  • “Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy.” Philippians 4:8
  • “More than anything you guard,……protect your mind, for life flows from it.”
    Proverbs 4:23 CEB
  • But even if we Choose joy, does it change our relationships with others?
  • “Nevertheless, it was admirable of you to participate in my affliction. Philippians 4:14

Reflection Questions

  1. Remember Happiness is how you feel when good things happen to you. And oy is an attitude and way of life that you choose despite what happens to you. Write down 3 things in each of those categories and thank God for the ways Joy shows up in your life
  2. Inciting Joy by Ross Gay - What if joy, instead of refuge or relief from heartbreak, is what [bursts forth] from us as we help each other carry our heartbreaks? Think through that for yourself as you walk through this season of your life.

Send The Parable Podcast a Text In this new year, The Parable Podcast is going to focus on a new theme each month. This is going to give us a focus and an opportunity to be mindful of not only ourselves but what that looks like for our friends and our family. We must dive into our story often and not only see where God has brought us but also continue learning and growing in empathy. Why is it we do the things we do? So, how often are you going to hear this? Monthly theme episodes will wrap up at the end of every month and launch us into the next few weeks. As we step into February, we are going to talk about expectations. Whether we realize it or not, I believe we all are carrying around so many expectations. It is these beliefs that are always in the background of our minds and hearts. But how can we navigate them when life is messy, surprising, hectic, and unsure? Want to revisit this topic more? Revisit or check out these episodes I have selected that connect with this idea of expectations and the unexpected. Reflection Questions Journal about what stood out to you the most today. What expectations of your life do you need to release? How have you witnessed the unexpected? Or if not, what is one way you can remember to do so? Send The Parable Podcast a Text Ever feel like you are untangling shame over and over again? Thrilled for you to meet my guest Author and Creative Arts Pastor Sarah Gerbers. She shares about how life can look beautiful even in the darkness of grief. Sarah shares the beauty of living an anonymous life, her role in the church, and the inspiration behind her book, 'Moonflower.' Our conversation delves into the lessons learned from navigating loss and grief. Sarah emphasizes the importance of recognizing the beauty in life despite challenges and encourages listeners to find meaning in their own experiences. Takeaways Aging can be both exciting and frightening, as we still feel young inside. Social media can be addictive and may not align with personal values. Anonymous living allows for deeper connections and presence in life. The moonflower symbolizes beauty that blooms in darkness and hiddenness. Grief can lead to personal growth and a deeper understanding of life. Each loss can reveal more of God's goodness and grace. Sound Bites "It's okay to not be okay." "Grief doesn't get the final word." "Each day is truly a gift." "God is my only platform." Reflection Questions What is one way you can dive into anonymous living this week? What else thrives in the night of your own life? And can you find the beauty despite the grief?
