Summary
The men and Huck make their way down the river again, and after traveling a couple of miles, the Duke and the King go back to scamming people. After several failed frauds the men get quite broke, and after a few days they start whispering together and Huck and Jim start to think that the worst is yet to come, deciding that they would try and flee as soon as they could. They land in a town, and the King heads ashore to scope out the town. At mid-day, the Duke and Huck head into town, and at the first free moment, Huck runs back towards the raft, calling out for Jim; to Huck’s horror, Jim is gone. He cries and goes all over trying to find Jim and he eventually comes across a young boy who says to Huck that a “runaway” slave was caught and that he is being held at a man called Sylas’ farm. Huck asks who caught the runaway, and the boy says it was an old man, and Huck realises that The King and the Duke had sold Jim to get some money.
Huck tries to think of ways to help Jim get out of imprisonment, and thinks that he could try and write to Ms. Watson saying that Jim is alive, but he starts to think that he and Jim would be treated horribly; Jim for running away, and Huck because he helped him run away. Huck starts to think that maybe he helped Jim run away because he was raised badly, and tries to pray that he will be better in the future. The praying doesn’t work and Huck believes that the reason he can’t pray properly is because you can’t pray a lie. He starts to reflect on their journey, and how good and kind and fatherly Jim had been to him, and Huck concluded that no matter how much he wants to be “good,” if it means that Jim goes back into slavery, then being good isn’t right. Not knowing where he is, or how to get him free, Huck determines that he will Free Jim…
