On Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day 2020. A year that has undeniably added stress and worry to the already overworked often underappreciated Moms in our circles. Moms, we see you...
Our Conversation with Legislator Carrie Solages was recorded on April 21, 2020. He discusses the impact of COVID-19 on the community he serves: the 3rd Legislative District in Nassau County, NY.
Important numbers/information referenced in The Podcast:

  • Office of Emergency Management 516-572-2240 (for small business help);
  • Smallbusinessimpact@nassaucountyny.gov;
  • 2nd half tax Payment extended due date: June 01, 2020;
  • Long Island Cares 631-582-3663 Ext. 109 (for food assistance/pantry);
  • Presbyterian Church, Central Avenue, Valley Stream (for food distribution/pantry);
  • Family Health Centers of LI 516-396-7500 (for COVID-19 testing);
  • Office of Minority Affairs, Lionel Chitty, Exec Director - lchitty@nassaucountyny.gov

As of May 04, 2020:
County Executive Curran announced that, as of last night, the total number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Nassau County has risen to 36,780. Sadly, the County Executive reports that 1,770 Nassau County residents have died from COVID-19. The County Executive reminds [us] that the growing number of total cases does not include the many residents that have previously tested positive for COVID-19 and have recovered.
Any resident who is showing symptoms of COVID-19 should self-quarantine and call their doctor or 888-364-3065 immediately, to set-up testing. You can also call 516-396-7500 to set up an appointment with Long Island FQHC, which has increased testing at their Elmont, Freeport, Hempstead and Westbury Locations. If you believe you are sick, do not call 911, visit your doctor or emergency room.
County Executive Curran revealed that, for the 19th straight day, Nassau County saw a reduction in COVID-19 related hospitalizations, and is down 58% from the high water mark less than a month ago. The County also saw a further reduction in COVID-19 ICU patients and ventilator patients, with both down more than 40% since their maximums. The County Executive also reported that the percentage of people being tested for COVID-19 [and] testing positive, reached a new low of 12%.
Both Governor Cuomo and County Executive Curran again discussed re opening efforts. While New York PAUSE is still in effect until at least May 15th, they both stressed the need for businesses to begin planning what re opening will look like for them. While we adjust to a new normal, we must be prepared and ready.
I remind residents that, due to the Governor’s and County Executive’s guidelines, my office continues to work remotely. If you have concerns, or in need of something, you can call my office at 516-571-6203, or email at csolages@nassaucountyny.gov.
In closing, while data is showing that we are bringing down the curve, I would like to continue to urge residents to maintain social distancing and proper hygienic guidelines, so that we can keep these numbers moving in the right direction.
Stay Home, Stay Safe.
TEOP announces a food distribution drive for Elmont residents on Friday, May 8 at Belmont Racetrack. The drive begins at 12:30pm and will continue until all items are distributed. Organizers request that you arrive on, or after 11:00am. Please observe all social distancing protocol.
