In the 1980s, there were only 63 Black films by, for, or about Black Americans. But in the 1990s, that number quadrupled, with 220 Black films making their way to cinema screens nationwide. What sparked this “Black New Wave?” Who blazed this path for contemporaries like Ava DuVernay, Kasi Lemmons and Jordan Peele? And how did these films transform American culture as a whole? Presenting The Class of 1989, a new limited-run series from pop culture critics Len Webb and Vincent Williams, hosts ...

In a world full of Oscar winners, there is also a large population of worthy performers who never had their own Academy Award moments. Whether being nominated one time, or seven times, or no times, nary a winning ballot with their name on it. Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl invite in Miss Independent himself, Jeremy Burgeydoodle, to discuss twenty four dudes and twenty three dames, all with bodies of excellent work. Actors from Ed Harris in "The Right Stuff" to Michael B Jordan's "Fruitvale Station" to d$'s girlfriend Amy Adams in "American Hustle" to Margot Robbie in... well, something good. Idris! Harrison! ScarJo! Mia! And so many more great thespians, all with one question - "Why don't they have an Oscar yet?", and tonight, we find out who truly defines that question. Plus, the 8th Annual Burgentine's Day commences, as Jeremy discusses his assigned films - "About Time", "Some Kind of Wonderful", "Notting Hill", "She's the One", and "A Single Man"... who wins and who falls to the bottom this year?…

Inching ever closer to the monumental episode #700, Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl are here to discuss not just life in the movies... but AFTERLIFE in the movies. The coolest, scariest, most unique, or best (subjective) portrayals of the Heavenly Realm... or the Hot Basement... and maybe even some purgatory in between. First, the Angelic Trio checks out the box office in 2024, with a round of Box Office Mojo - figuring out what films made the most money... domestically of course (because we aren't communists), and in the calendar year. Then, a list of films featuring the Big Guy Upstairs, Ol' No Shoulders down below, a few angels, a few demons and more. From Bill and Ted to Swayze to Albert Brooks to some Pixar Dr. Earl has never seen, it's a fun list. A blessed list, we hope. Thoughts and prayers. Has to be blessed with Malick, right? Right? Finally, a quick look at the new film "Companion", and both d$ and Mikey's recommendations.…

It's the start of a new year, which means it's time for a new round of Movie ReFlicktions, as Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl are back to ReFlickt'd all the movies they've seen in the last several weeks! A double dose of Liam Neeson kicks off the reviews, with Producer Tommy's offspring in a Lifetime Movie, The Don' biopic, a cartoon Hobbit, Jerry Buts is back with his thievery den, and Dr. Earl goes old school with some Javert and Jean Valjean. Also, d$ continues his love for his Hollywood beloved, but fears for the choices being made. A slate of documentaries cover everything from Superman to Kermit to The Beach Boys to Michael McDonald's sound in Yacht Rock music. Plus a random chat about young Hollywood and much more. The review of 2024 films are in full swing, but first there is the annual look back at the movies seen last year that were NOT FROM last year. Its the NOT 2024 Top Ten, where we highlight films worthy of a second discussion because they just impacted us so much. And for the 3rd year running on this particular episode, Dave, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl welcome in Friend of the Show, streaming live from the freezing metropolis somewhere in Bainbridge, Wyoming, that is one Jacob "Roth from Wyoming." Together, the foursome discuss their top ten faves of the year from all over the place, as far back as the early 20s and 30s to all the way through the 60s and 70s and in 2010s and 2020s... assigned movies come into play as films others were asked to watch appear in various Top Tens, while Burgess recommended movies keep coming up as well. Mikey is loving some old Gena Rowland and Walter Matthau as an action star, while #XLessDrEarl digs into more music docs, Dave revisits a Hallmark fave, and Roth finally sets sail on the ship of dreams. Plus, why did Green Book get so much hate, Eastwood represents (even if he is a d-bag of a romantic partner) and Powers Boothe makes another list. Also... Garrison makes a random appearance with lots of Chucky Grodin love. Movies discussed, and where to find them at time of recording: Atlantics (Netflix) Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back (MAX; Criterion Channel) The Boys Next Door (Hallmark Movie Now) A Brighter Summer Day (Criterion Channel) Dirty Harry (for rental) Duck Soup (rental) Extreme Prejudice (rental) A Few Good Men (AMC+; rental) Frankenstein (rental) French Connection (rental) Gimme Shelter (MAX; Criterion Channel) Green Book (FXNow) Hang 'Em High (MGM+; TubiTV) Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmakers Apocalypse (rental) Into the Wild (Hoopla; rental) The Last of the Mohicans (rental) Magnolia (rental) Margin Call (Amazon Prime; TubiTV) Minari (rental) Modern Romance (rental) The Outlaw Josey Wales (rental) Priscilla (MAX) Safety Last (MAX) Seven Samurai (MAX; Criterion Channel) The Shawshank Redemption (AMC+) The Sunset Limited (MAX) State and Main (Amazon Prime) Stop Making Sense (rental) Suicide Kings (Amazon Prime; TubiTV) Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (Hoopla; TubiTV; MGM+) Targets (Hoopla; rental) The Thing (Shudder; rental) The Three Musketeers (Plex; rental) Titanic (Paramount+) Tremors (Paramount+ on AppleTV; rental) Twelve Monkeys (rental) 2010: The Year We Make Contact (rental) While We're Young (rental) While You Were Sleeping (Disney+) Woman Under the Influence (MAX; The Criterion Channel)…

It's become an annual tradition that started with d$ wanting an excuse to talk about Jackie Chan's "The Foreigner"... a movie not worth of a Top Ten of the year appearance, but worthy of discussion... a surprise, nay, an absolute delight. Hence, the annual "Surprise & Delight" episode! These are movies that surprised and delighted Mikey, d$, #XLessDrEarl, and even Friend of the Show, Miss Independent himself, Jeremy Burgess. First up, some chatter about Eric Roberts' new autobiography, plus thoughts on the indie movie scene. Then, Jason Statham's IP'ness... Jake Gyllenhaal's "Road House"... Hugh Grant's winning villainy... d$ getting it wrong, then getting it Hot n Frosty right... plus love for Glen Powell and admiration for Sebastian Stan. Then, 2025's Burgentine's Day commences, as assignments are given from the the crew and a few friends...…

It's that time of the year, when the annual Movie Auction takes place... and by "the annual", we mean the second one we've ever done! In a concept borrowed from The Big Picture Podcast (all nods and love to Amanda Dobbins, Chris Ryan, and Sean Fennessey), Mikey and d$ are joined by Friends of the Show Garrison "Pride of Kennesaw" Ryfun and Roth from Wyoming to fill out their roster of films for 2025. Everyone has a proverbial $1000 to work with, as various movies are put on the auction block and bid for - with the intentions of getting the movies that will make the most money domestically, as well as will get both Oscar love in early 2026. The big ones are all hear -- Fantastic Four, Avatar, Wicked, and Superman included -- plus some surprises, like live action Stitch and Toothless, a Peruvian Paddington, more dinosaurs, and Glen Powell running. A Rotten Tomatoes game determines the draft order, and will Roth go rogue again??…

The 2024 Christmas Gifts (and our Lumps of Coal!)
Two voices always emerge every December, even if they haven't been heard on the show all year... first, The Cheetah Girls, reminding us that it is, in fact, a Marshmallow World... and second, the beloved Carnegie Hall headliner herself, Jennifer Kaufman... and it's now that very time! In this episode, Mikey and d$ welcome in Friend of the Show Roth from Wyoming and the aforementioned Jenny Kauf, not only to catch up a little, but also to do our very first Christmas Movie Draft. Picking films to fit into 7 categories - Movies with Santa... RomComs... Christmas Comedies... Christmas Classic films (anything from the 20th Century, really)... Unconventional holiday films... Short films (60 minutes or less) ... and Wild Card... each of the foursome picks and drafts movies to their own lineup, in an effort to have the best Christmas Film lineup of the show!
