After the first shock of a paranormal encounter or experience, we take the route of self-doubt to protect our sanity and sense of preservation from the unknown. It is easier to give yourself a scientific explanation to yourself than to believe your own eyes, ears, sixth sense and self. Accepting the reality of a supernatural world and the possibility of facing any entity belonging to it seems frightening. It is our default setting.
