July 10, 1925...The State of Tennessee vs. John Thomas Scopes began.
In the mid 1800s Charles Darwin proposed an alternate theory to the creation of the universe and development of man, by the early 20th century this theory was taught in schools along with Divine Creation. Tennessee, in its chosen science textbook teachers of the state were required to use had a chapter on Darwin's theory of evolution. Fundamental Christians of the state, lead by congressman John Washington Butler, wanted nothing but the creation outlined in the book of Gensis taught in public schools. He proposed a law to the House, the Butler Act, which overwhelmingly passed both House and Senate, making the teaching of evolution illegal in Tennessee for 42 years.
