Mithra is the Zoroastrian sacred deity of covenant, light, and oath. Zoroastrianism is firmly dated to the 5th century BC. and may have roots in the second millennium BC Trilingual inscriptions of Artaxerxes II (r. 404 - 358 BC) at Susa and Hamadan, the Persian king Artaxerxes II invoked "Ahuramazda, Anahita, and Mithra protects me from all evil". The Rigveda, a Hindu text probably composed around 1700 to 1100 BC, has a solar deity not unlike Mithra. In the Atharvaveda, a Hindu text, written between 1200 and 1000 BC, Mitra is associated with the rising sun. The Sun Salutation, still used in yoga today, is preceded by chanting 'OM Mitraya Namaha'. 'Mitraya' is the dative of the name 'Mitra,' one of the 108 names for Lord Surya / Sun God. RD Barnett has argued that the royal seal of the Saussatar king of Mitanni from c. 1450 BC. depicts a tauroctonous (ritual bull) of Mithras. “Persian Mithraism was more a collection of traditions and rituals than doctrine. However, when the Babylonians took Mithraic rituals and mythology from the Persians, they thoroughly revised their theology. The Babylonian priests combined Ahura-Mazda with the god Baal, Anahita with the goddess Ishtar, and Mithras with Shamash, their god of justice, victory and protection (and the sun god from whom King Hammurabi received his law code in the 18th century BC). The sun itself is considered to be the "Eye of Mithras".
