Dal 1982, giorno di rialzi dopo giorno di rialzi, sempre più persone avevano spostato i loro risparmi nel mercato azionario, e nel 1995 tutti erano pronti ad investire nella prossima novità.

La novità la portò un team di ragazzi dell’Università dell’Illinois, che regalò al mondo il primo internet browser capace di mostrare testo e immagini insieme nella stessa schermata. Ah oltre al browser i ragazzi fecero partire anche la bolla delle dot-com.

Tra il 1995 e il 2000, la promessa di un’età dell’oro di internet ha portato gli investitori di tutto il mondo a scagliare i loro soldi alle azioni di qualunque società avesse un “.com” alla fine del nome. Aziende con pochi mesi di vita, fondate da ragazzini appena usciti dal college, arrivarono a valere cifre mostruose e senza senso, per poi crollare rapidamente una volta raggiunti livelli ingiustificabili. La bolla delle dot-com è l’evento di storia economica moderna che ha impattato di più le nostre abitudini, i lavori tra cui possiamo scegliere oggi e il modo in cui li svolgiamo.
