Yup, totally. In episode 51 of the Special Needs Supermom podcast I talk about how you could have an autistic kid and not even know. Why me and my hubby totally missed the signs with our special needs child.
I mean Wonderboy is fun, social, loves to hug, looks you in the eye… no way he could be autistic right? We also had no problems at home. Let me repeat that: No problem at home. And with the movie Rain Man as our only reference to autism we thought his teacher was bonkers when she even dared to suggest this.
So, how can you have an autistic kid without you realizing?
1. Forget about the movie Rain Man. For one autism comes in many forms and shapes. Like our Wonderboy they could be big huggers or behave in other ways that is not seen autistic.
2. Second, maybe your kid looks like you and therefore you know instinctively what your kid needs. Because you already have the systems in place for you. Like not much socializing in the weekend. A strict day-to-day routine..
3. I tell you some signs we did not perceive as a problem but were, come to think of it, a good indication there was something going on.
4. Some good news: we still to this day have very little problems at home. And that might be the case for you as well. Much has to do with how you handle the possible diagnosis. Hint: it has a lot to do with not seeing it as a problem (I know, that can be easier said than done).
Little did we know back then. How much we have learned since. And how proud we are today. I hope this podcast gives you some insights but will also take the fear away of a possible diagnosis and your kid’s future.
Stay sane & stay happy.
