Join me for a conversation with long time Durango community member and professional artist Lisa Pedolsky. Her unique fine art hand built ceramics are sophisticated yet playful reflecting a fusion of African and Japanese influences from textiles and crafts as well as mid century modern designs. These ceramic sculptures are made with a process called slab construction using red earthenware clay. Lisa takes us through the steps of this process from the two dimensional sketch to the finished piece which has been fired twice in her electric kiln. Her work is recognizable but open to interpretation, “offering an opportunity for aesthetic contemplation” and all have titles such as the “friendly monster vase” reflecting the fresh playful nature of her work. Lisa talks about the positive impact of attending an artist residency at the Centro de Arte Curaumilla in Chile for four weeks in 2013. She found that experiencing a different culture “turned her perspective upside down”, after which she published an article in Studio Potter magazine sharing her experience. Lisa also appears in Pottery Making Illustrated in an article highlighting her hand built process. She’s excited to have two of her pieces now in the permanent collection at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse as well in the Rosenfield Collection at the museum cafe. Her beautiful ceramic sculptures are recognized internationally and can be found in galleries and museums nationwide, including Diane West Jewelry and Art at 820 Main Avenue in her hometown of Durango.
