#46 The Weight and Wisdom of the Words We Use
Manage episode 440364288 series 3524816
The words we use and the effect they have can make a difference in how we communicate with others and of course how we portray ourselves.
In this episode I speak about:
- the difference between "are you still breastfeeding?" or "are you breastfeeding?" and how loaded similar questions can be (plus the endless unsolicited advice given to Mums and pregnant women)
- 'just' a Mum being the biggest understatement ever!
- how it can feel to be asked the every day platitudes
- words we can use to be less demeaning, upsetting and offensive
- how healing it can be to use words differently, especially around birth
- postnatal depletion as opposed to postnatal depression
- switching from blame to a question
- the work of Jono Lancaster
- gentle language I use in my teaching
- the musts and the shoulds we say to ourselves...
- "is she a 'good' baby?"!
Here are the two articles I read from; 'Six pregnancy terms you probably won't hear again' and 'Why are pregnancy terms so demeaning?'.
Themes: language, birth, pregnancy, breastfeeding, yoga, emotional inteligence, the podcast 'Child'
At the end of the podcast I share a poem called 'Just One?' written by me.
