The white-hot controversy over criminal justice and bail reform has ramped up yet another notch. This time, however, a progressive district attorney and a professor of math are at the forefront of recent evidence that strongly suggests that defendants released on zero-bail are more likely to re-offend. 70% of defendants released for free reoffended and were twice as likely to commit a new crime, compared to those who had to post bail. In addition, suspects were three times as likely to be rearrested for committing a violent crime under zero-bail versus being required to post bond. While reform advocates dismiss the idea of bail reform as being behind a rise in crime, others, including a growing chorus of prosecutors and law enforcement, say that it is absolutely responsible for the increase in both crime and recidivism -- including murder at the hands of individuals who have been released.
