In this episode, we will look at how Islamic theologians came to puzzle their heads over the many commandments and prohibtions which the Quran contains. Taking a step back from the activity of the jurists, who tried to figure out the legal status of this or that action, the theologians asked some more fundamental questions: Where do moral values actually come from, and how do we know of them? From God's revelation, in which He tells humans how He wants them to live? Or do we humans have the ability to know what is good conduct, independent of revelation? The answers given by two important theological schools could not have been more different...
