July 1st is known across the United States as the day when medical school graduates start their first day as resident physicians in hospitals nationwide. As with all new beginnings, anxiety and fear are common and expected emotions in assuming these new roles and responsibilities. However, this trepidation does not end after one’s first day of work. “Pre-shift anxiety” is a phenomenon seen in many new-graduate healthcare workers during their first few months, and even years, of starting in the workplace. This anxiety is usually an amalgamation of fear of making mistakes, imposter syndrome, comparison with others' improvements, "analysis paralysis," striving for impossible perfectionism and lack of belief in one's progress and skills. How can we build confidence as new graduates and new hires? Do self-affirmations help tackle pre-shift anxiety? How can we successfully debrief post-shift? How can we set boundaries from our jobs and maintain a healthy work-life balance?

We are joined today by Diana Page, board-certified nurse practitioner and the founder and burnout prevention coach behind Self-Care Catalyst, which provides the signature program "Resilient Nurse Roadmap" that seeks to help nurses and NPs navigate their professional paths away from burnout and into confidence, freedom, and joy. She received her BS in Biology from Wheaton College Massachusetts in 2005 and MSN in Acute Care Nurse Practitioner from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 2009. Diana currently stands as an outpatient neurology nurse practitioner in Maine and is a nurse well-being contributor to nursing platforms such as The Nursing Beat, Keener, and Nurse.org.
