On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. Tom DeWeese is president of American Policy Center. Tom is one of the nation's leading advocates of individual liberty, free enterprise, private property rights, personal privacy and back-to-basics education.Tom began by explaining non-governmental organizations, otherwise known as NGO's. They're experts at pushing various policies and issues along with the grants to tell recipients to apply for. They pressure city council members, county commissioners and even state legislators to put whatever policies the NGO's have in mind, in place. Jim noted how even the media gets involved in this so that when a community or a state rejects one of these offers, they tell listeners/viewers how certain funding has been turned down, making it appear as though it was a bad decision. What they don't explain is the part about how that community or state has their hands tied if the money is accepted. In other words, that community or state has now lost control at some level.The latest trick has to do with getting citizens to voluntarily surrender a level of control of their land. It involves land trusts such as the Sierra Club, the Nature Conservancy and others who are pushing for farmers to sign what are called, "conservation easements." These are being offered with the promise that if they sign, the farmer will no longer have to worry about developers taking their land. It may sound good on the surface, but one problem is that the land trusts have the farmers sign these easements in perpetuity. Conversely, the land trusts aren't tied to the perpetuity clause. They can buy, sell or trade these conservation easements with other organizations or even with the government.…

Israeli violations are said to be the reason for their decision. --A task force devoted to the prosecution of October 7th massacre perpetrators and supporters was established by the U.S. Attorney General's office. That's according to a memorandum issued by Attorney General Pam Bondi.--The Palestinian Authority Chairman, Mahmoud Abbas, issued a decree on Monday, ostensibly ending his embattled government's terrorist payment program known as "pay for slay."--Iranian people marked the 46th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution with cries of, "Death to the Islamic Republic" and "Death to the Dictator" ringing through several cities.--Iran's currency plunged to a new all-time low against the U.S. dollar on February 8th.--President Trump appears to have at least partially won over Jordanian leader King Abdullah II after their Tuesday meeting to discuss plans for the U.S. to take over and rebuild the Gaza strip.--A Hezbollah field commander, Abbas Haidar, was killed last Friday along with several members of his family, in an explosion in southern Lebanon.--The Trump administration is planning to sell more than 7 billion dollars in weapons to Israel, including thousands of missiles and bombs.--2 Jewish men were accosted by a woman spewing anti-semitic slurs in mid-town Manhattan. On January 25th, Pete Hegseth was sworn in as the 29th Secretary of Defense. He promised to eradicate wokeness from the military and has as his mission to revive the warrior ethos and restore trust in the military and to rebuild it by matching threats to capabilities and reestablish deterrence by defending the homeland. Returning to Crosstalk to discuss this issue was Elaine Donnelly. Elaine is president of the Center for Military Readiness, an independent, nonpartisan public policy organization that reports on and analyzes military/social issues. Since its founding in 1993, CMR has advocated for high, uncompromised standards in all forms of military training and sound priorities in the making of military/social policies.Elaine began by noting that the Biden administration made it clear from day one that they were going to pursue a very liberal social agenda/experiment in the military. Roman Catholicism has a long history of veering from Scripture. There's their false view of Matthew 16:18 from which they derive their origin. There's purgatory, infant baptism for regeneration, transubstantiation, the selling of indulgences, the sinlessness of Mary and so much more.
