On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. ×Mothers are the person we are born into the word trusting, the one person that drops everything to take care of us, and most of the time the very first person to crush us. Dena Schlosser followed that exact pattern, except instead of saying something wrong to her child, or placing unnecessary rules that didn't make much sense, she would go one step further, and cut the arms off her child.…
Your home is supposed to be somewhere you can feel safe, the walls should be a warm safe hug, but that's not always the case. Sometimes the scariest monsters are living in those same walls that should be safe, waiting for their opportunity to strike.

Everyone has experienced seeing something out of the corner of their eye and once turned around it was gone, either it disappeared quickly, or it was never there in the first place. What about that feeling of being watched, whether we are with people, or alone, only to shake it off as our nerves. Could it have been something else though? Could we have been stalked by Slender Man?…
A kidnapping is always heartbreaking, but imagine how it would feel if your child was kidnapped and you were the first person to ever receive a ransom note for their safe return. Today we talk about the United States first official case of a kidnapping that demanded money for the child, Charley Ross.…
Sylvia Likens, a beautiful 16 year old girl with a life of opportunities ahead of her. She would fall into the care of a monster who would strip that away from her. This is one of the hardest cases I have ever researched, this is your trigger warning.

War is a horrific thing, and to be a soldier in war is terrifying. There aren't many things we see anymore that we cannot explain, but for the longest time Angels Glow was a mystery to us. A mystery we believe we have solved now, but back then we believed certain soldiers were just blessed, by angels.…
We have all heard of the horror stories surrounding dating apps, yet thousands of people use them everyday. If you are one of those people that actively use dating apps, you should remember a few key rules, always go on a date in public, always tell someone where you are going, and who you are going with, and when to expect you to be home, and never go somewhere private with someone that you have never met before.…

David Lewis would wake on Super Bowl Sunday to an empty house. He would pop a tape into his TV and begin to record the Football game that was streaming. Then he would start the dryer, possibly make two sandwiches and leave the home. We are unsure as to where he intended to go, but we do know somehow he ended up states away, in a morgue as a John Doe.…
As we have learned time and time again, your life can change in an instant. Even knowing that though it is still shocking to find out how quickly things can go south. A family would attend their church one day, head home and turn in for the night, with plans for the next morning. Only the next morning would never come for them.…
Ships went sailing often, and most of the time they would return home, but there was the occasion where they would be sunk, lost at sea, and sometimes they would be unlucky enough to run across pirates. Whatever happened to the ships, the crew would fall to the same fate. Except in the case of Mary Celeste. She would set sail one day with a full and experienced crew, and less then a month later she would be spotted, sailing alone, with no clue as to what happened to her Crew.…
We have talked a lot about doctors that used their power as a doctor to their advantage, killing patients in the hospital, or doing house calls. The doctor we are going to talk about today is much different, he did use his degree to his advantage, but in a much different way. Today we’re talking about Marcel Petiot.…
Watching the news can cause you to have unnecessary anxiety, but in this story a young girl is almost saved by watching the news. She hears there is a killer on the loose, and decides to double and triple check that all of her windows and doors were locked. Only that didn't stop the killer from entering her home.…

The butterfly effect is when a small decision can drastically change the outcome of your life. In this creepy pasta we cover a story that is the perfect example of the butterfly effect. You never really know the person you've married, things they hid always come out after they die. Most of the time you expect something small, like some unknown debt or even if they had a child that you did not know about. Not that they had murdered someone, much less that they were a serial killer.

Today is a special episode, this is a very well known celebrity case, one that happened either on, or after one of the happiest holidays around. JonBenét Ramsey was a six year pageant girl, who would be found dead one morning after the parents read a heartbreakingly long ransom note. Today we may have the tools to solve her case. Welcome to our last episode, of Christmas and Crime.…
Most of our Seven days of Christmas and Crime episodes happened on Christmas eve, or Christmas. But today's case is a little different. It happened during the Christmas season, but instead of a day that some was murdered on, it's the fact that her body was covered in Christmas presents that makes it a holiday horror. Welcome to episode six of Christmas and Crime.…
Most people don't expect anything for Christmas, and Sameena was the same way. All she expected was that the person who she was in a two year relationship with would leave his other relationship and only focus on her. But she didn't get the only thing she was asking for, unfortunately she got the complete opposite. Welcome to episode five of Christmas and Crime.…
Christmas morning is filled with kids waking their entire family up early to open gifts, all over the world there is joy and excitement as they realize they got the toy they wanted, and they run to eat breakfast with their family. Christmas is a time where family will spend hours together, not where family is murdered together. Welcome to episode four of Christmas and Crime.…
Christmas should be filled with joy and opening gifts with the ones you love, of course with the occasional fight between family members, but for one family that was not the case. They would wake up on Christmas day to see their mother waiting on the couch for them to open presents, but instead of a warm smile, she would only be able to give them a cold dead stare. Welcome to episode three of Christmas and Crime.…
Christmas is usually filled with joy and happiness, not with fear and torture. Kristy Baum went with his siblings to visit his older sister for Christmas one year, but the only thing they got for Christmas was trauma, and the loss of a brother. Welcome to episode two of Christmas and Crime
Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and gift giving. Melissa and Alan were no different, they were neighbors that had been on the rocks a couple of times before and didn't always get along, but Melissa decided that she was going to still give him a gift for Christmas, only Alan refused. This would send Melissa into a rage. Welcome to episode one of our seven days of Christmas and Crime.…
A heartbreaking story that makes anybody interested in true crime mad, is finally coming to an end. The authorities just released a name for the boy in the box. This was a cold case from 1957, we had a body, and some gruesome theories, but we didn't have a name, making it almost impossible to find the people responsible, until now. The boy in the box is coming to a close, it's now only a matter of time before this unsolved mystery finally sees its end.…
A white creature, ape like, but weirdly humanoid. It is a creature that lives in the snow and freezing areas, that has the personality of a bear, and the hunger of one. If you are caught in its grips it will often eat you, leaving little to no trace. Not only have we never been able to track it down and confirm its existence, we have more and more stories piling up about it every day. Today we talk about the infamous Yeti, or better known as, the abominable snowman.…
If Christmas is a holiday you celebrate, or even know about, you probably have a picture that just popped into your head. A jolly fat man with a white beard holding a list whos being followed by a bunch of tiny green elves. These creatures were created and came from a different origin though. They did not serve a jolly old man, they were originally small creatures who were invisible to the human eye, and liked to cause chaos.…

The disappearance of Steven Koecher is a very interesting one, most people leave some sort of trail, or evidence behind that something happened, but besides a vehicle that looked like he intended to come back to it, and some cell phone tower pings, we have nothing that points to where Steven disappeared to. He drove himself to Nevada, parked and left his car alone, and hasn't seen sense.…
We spent our childhoods being told we were either on the naughty or nice list, that we should watch what we do because otherwise Santa would bring us gifts, but things were a lot different when Krampus was involved. I think if the story of Krampus was around the United States when I grew up there would be less children not caring about ending up on the naughty list, because instead of getting coal, they could have been eaten.…
