TRANSCRIPT:
Hello everyone, my name is Shivika, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all the new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

Today we will be looking at the words ‘Couple’ and ‘Common’.

The word couple is spelled as C-O-U-P-L-E. This word can be used as a noun and a verb. There are two definitions for the noun version of couple. The first definition is two individuals that are in some way considered together or can be grouped together through a common factor. For example, “A couple of boys were skating at the park.” A couple is used to group the boys together as all of them had the same action.

The other definition of noun is describing two people who are romantically together. So if they are engaged, dating, married, or romantically together in any sense. For example, “The couple fell in love in a month.” Couple is used to describe a pair who are romantically involved.

The verb form of couple is to combine anything. For example, “A sense of hope is coupled with a sense of loss.” This sentence is combining hope with loss. A synonym for this specific definition can be mix, integrate, or incorporate.

The word common is spelled as C-O-M-M-O-N. The word common can be used as a noun and an adjective. The meaning of the noun form of common is a piece of land that is open for public use. For example, “In Luxembourg, people buy their groceries in the town common.”

One of the definitions for the verb form of common is something that is done often or occurs often, something that is not rare. A synonym for this can be usual or familiar. An example can be, “A person reading physical books is not as common now as it once was.” In this sentence, common is used to say that people read physical books more often in earlier times then now.

Another definition of the verb form of common is something that is shared by multiple people of things. For example a common border between countries which means that the countries share the same border. It can also be said as a common trait among people which means those people have that same trait. An example of a sentence can be, “The Johnsons and the Boatwrights have a common friend.” This sentence means that both of them are friends with the same person.
