Listen in to Chris chatting with Maryland resident - Kate Spanos about the links between the Irish and the island of Montserrat (The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean) in the West Indies.

Kate describes herself as a dancer, educator, scholar, communicator, and arts administrator. She is interested in storytelling, community building, and looking at dance as a means of social change.

Kate has links this side of "the Pond." She received her Master’s degree in Traditional Irish Dance Performance from the University of Limerick‘s Irish World Academy of Music & Dance.

Kate earned her Ph.D. in Dance & Performance Studies at the University of Maryland, USA. Her dissertation is entitled: “Dancing the Archive: Rhythms of Change in Post-Volcano Identities on Montserrat, West Indies.” During her research she investigated the role of dance, music, and festival performances in the formation of national and cultural identities on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. "It has historical ties to Ireland and performances of “Irishness” there differ from elsewhere in the world, especially during the island’s annual St. Patrick’s Festival."

Kate talks to Chris about her life's journey to date and experiences in Monserrat.
