From trap to experimental, Kuro’s work defies normative currents of Hip-Hop’s soundscape with his work ethic and forays into Hip-Hop’s many sub-genres. P.SOUL is a poet/producer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. 1:16:17WillGil is one-half of the Hip Hop Review Podcast, where he and his co-host VonteThePro discuss new and throwback mainstream albums in the Hip Hop world. It is a light, engaging, and honest podcast. Both WillGil and VonteThePro provide thoughtful and concise reviews of albums and mixtapes—all while expressing preconceived notions that Will and Vonte (and all of us) have when listening to a new album. WillGil took some time to chat with us about his upbringing on the West Coast and the inception of the Hip Hop Review Podcast. We also get into some of WillGil’s ups and downs in his podcasting career to-date, which ranges from the difficulty of preparing and reviewing not-so-good albums and mixtapes, reviewing brand new projects in the midst of the “streaming wars,” to receiving a mention from Peter Rosenberg. ====================================================== Keep up with the Hip Hop Review Podcast here: https://soundcloud.com/hip-hop-review-podcast Follow WillGill @Iam_willgil VonteThePro has some dope music (like me and Artic). 60 East is an Indie Hip-Hop artist from Ontario, California with an inspirational story. This Inland Empire emcee has gone through dark periods like many artists. I talk to 60 East about his upbringing in Ontario, big influences on his life and most of his discography. Jabee is a rapper from Oklahoma City with a story to tell. Armed with memories of his own experiences filtered through the lens of books by the likes of Huey Newton, Assata Shakur, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jabee's album, "Black Future," is full of socially conscious and introspective songs that bang, a rarity in present day Hip-Hop. He acknowledges the past and the present, but as the album's title suggests, Jabee looks towards the future and inspires the listener to get active and create the desired outcome for oneself and one's community. If our cosign isn't enough, look up what Sway and Public Enemy's Chuck D have to say about the up and coming emcee. We caught up with Jabee before a show, and talked to him about his upbringing in Oklahoma City, poverty, Okalhoma City's music scene, being racially profiled and arrested for nothing, the independent music grind, appearing on Sway in the Morning, getting cosigned by Chuck D, and so much more. Joshua Harris was the Green Party candidate for mayor of Baltimore City in 2016, securing a remarkable 10%-13% of the vote, but don't confuse him for a politician. He is an activist who works in the community on issues of civic engagement, educating people on where to get needed information about what is happening in the communities they live in, and also training citizens on grassroots organization. He is also a proponent of the arts and how they can help to build strong communities, and his non-profit, Hollins Creative Placemaking, does just that. We speak with Josh about his upbrining and move to Baltimore, how he was able to make it, his motivations and how he got into politics, and what's next for him post election. Mikel Miles is the creator of Samurai Shin, a dope new comic book series that is poised to make an impact in the comic book world. There isn't much representation of Black people or Hip-Hop culture in the anime world, but Miles blends the worlds by incorporating Afro-Asian characters into his comic, as well as offering a nice laid back Hip-Hop soundtrack for your listening pleasure while you read. This episode is an interesting look into the creative process of someone creating something totally new from the ground up, and is definitely a must listen for anyone who is trying to do the same. 1:52:04Brandon Soderberg is Baltimore City Paper's deputy editor and arts editor. As a journalist, he's covered some of the most important moments in Baltimore City's music and culture (such as the deaths of Lor Scoota and Freddie Gray and the rise of Tate Cobain and the Baltimore Club Music scene), as well as huge national stories (traveling to cover the Republican and Democratic National Conventions). We talk to Brandon about everything, including how he went from writing for his Blogspot blog (http://no-trivia.com) to writing for major publications such as SPIN, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and eventually Baltimore City Paper, alt-weekly publications as a whole, the Baltimore music scene, writing, race, and much more. You need to hear this. Follow Brandon on Twitter at https://twitter.com/notrivia and check out his latest articles at http://www.citypaper.com/bcpnews-brandon-soderberg-20150630-staff.html. D. Watkins is an educator, community activist, and critically acclaimed author. His most recent book, "The Cook Up: A Crack Rock Memoir," chronicles his life's journey. From the streets of East Baltimore and the fast money and danger that come with the drug trade, to receiving two Master's degrees and being an advocate for changing communities through reading and literacy, Watkins' experience and credentials give him a unique perspective and ability to articulate the realities of life for the voiceless masses who reside in the most forgotten and unloved neighborhoods of the United States. Listen as we speak with Watkins about his experiences in Baltimore, how he made it out of the street life, his perspectives on race and education, and of course his musical tastes. Channel 10 Podcast
Your name is one of the most important things you will ever have in your life. Potential allies, enemies, employers, and loves interests glean from it a glimpse into your upbringing, culture, and status in society. A name passed down from an influential and wealthy grandfather can open doors without you ever having to lift a finger to turn the knob, while a quote unquote “ethnic” name that originates from a culture of lower standing in the hierarchy of the class, or caste system of society, can close those doors just as quickly. In the world of Hip-Hop, we choose our names carefully, piecing them together from names we acquired from our neighborhoods, attributes that we embody or aspire to become, and role models, whether fictional or nonfictional, that have some quality that appeals to us. Throughout the conversations that we’ve had with various artists in the Hip-Hop world, we’ve gotten to hear the fascinating origin stories of their names. On this episode, we take a look back though our conversations with Stone Mecca, Shawn Setaro, Born King, Joker The Bailbondsman, Cole James Cash, and Gemstones about how they got their names, but before that we have a clip of Channel 10 Podcast co host Singodsuperior explaining his name, a name which I’m sure many of you have probably wondered about. Are someone with an interesting store of how your name came to be? Call us and leave a message with your story at (443) 885-0997 or email us at channel10podcast@gmail.com, and we may air your story on a future episode of the show.
