Scrooge, awakened at midnight, awaits the arrival of the Ghost of Christmas Past, as forewarned by Marley's ghost. At one o'clock, a childlike figure with an air of wisdom appears, identifying itself as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Granting Scrooge the ability to fly, the spirit takes him on a journey through his past—his childhood, lonely holidays, and pivotal moments. Scrooge witnesses the kindness of his father and the heartbreak of losing his sister Fan. The ghost reveals scenes of joy at Fezziwig's party and the poignant breakup with his love, Belle, due to greed. Unable to bear more, Scrooge pleads to return home, ending the ethereal journey and finding himself back in his room, overwhelmed and desperate, as he falls asleep once more.
