📚 Book Review by Omar Nizam:
A book whose very title conjures up a sense of unbridled excitement for all who are interested in History, Theology, Religious History, and the Arabic & Aramaic languages.
Emran El-Badawi's dissertation is a fascinating and long overdue study that examines the "conversation" between the Arabic Qur'an and the Aramaic Gospels, i.e. the Gospels preserved in the Syriac and Christian Palestinian Aramaic dialects.
The book examines the history of religious movements in the Late Antique Middle East period, arguing that the Qur'an can be historically viewed as a response to the disunity and sectarianism that was prevalent in the Aramaic-speaking Churches.
The study shows how the Qur'an re-purposes and dogmatically re-articulates the Aramaic Gospel traditions to fit it's own theology that comprises of a strict monotheism, a post-Rabbinic anti-clerical stance, and a heavily Apocalyptic worldview.
Emran El-Badawi's apprenticeship under other renowned personalities in the field - including Sidney Griffith, Fred Donner, and Gabriel Said Reynolds - has led to a final scholarly outcome of a book that can only be thought of as par excellence.
As such, it is well deserving of full marks (with great distinction).
My Rating: 5/5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (with great distinction)
