When you say, "I can't do that; it's too hard," is this because you've tried it and found it hard, or because so many other people told you it was, so you never actually tried? How much do we let other people's limitations define our own? Maybe you can go further than all your friends and relatives!
Takeaways:
- Is it your voice/ are you doing what you want to do, or is someone else telling you what to do because “this is what success looks like?”
- Someone else’s limitations aren’t necessarily our own. Usually, if you have a negative belief, it’s based on someone else’s voice.
- We are creating stories about ourselves all the time. Are your stories helping or hurting you?
- Success can be defined any way you choose to define it.
- Gather opinions if you need to make a choice, but in the end, decide for yourself.
- Societal “truths” such as “show business is hard” can be untrue for you - ie, try different things; don’t let other people’s beliefs turn you off.
- For example: Try all foods at least once - don’t take someone’s word that “they’re bad.”
- As far as “show business is hard,” change your perspective. As an actor, auditioning is the job. Booking is the reward.
- What values are important to you? Define them and then create your life around them.
- Baby step your way into the changes you want to make if you feel stuck or unhappy. Remember, success is how you define it.
- Cognitive dissonance can come in when your beliefs are different from your actions - you’re trying to do something new and more positive, but you still believe you’re not worth it or something.
- Self-limiting beliefs sit in the subconscious mind. We must reprogram them there in order to achieve meaningful change.
- Authenticity and Strategy aren’t mutually exclusive. One can be strategic in how they approach life, business, career, or relationships and still be authentic too!
- Children wait for our reaction to know how they should react - this shows how easily swayed we all can be by others.
- Do we really need to impress others on social media with our hustle and “always busy” image?
- Try something with multiple approaches before deciding it’s hard.
- Mindfulness practices such as yoga, deep breathing, and meditation teach us to be present in the moment, which gives you greater self-awareness to your own thoughts.
