He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” Matthew 17:5
The Transfiguration is a watershed moment for the disciples. It is a moment in which they see Jesus in radiant glory. It is an encounter that changes them as it is validates who Jesus is: He is the Son of God. The Father is pleased with the Son. There is unity between them. The moment of this mountain was meant to tell the discipes (Peter, James, and John) that Jesus being fully human, was also fully divine.
This encounter teaches us many things but perhaps the single greatest thing is that it foreshadows the promise of eternity. One day we too will see Jesus as He really is. One day we will sit in the presence of His full glory. And the weight of that truth should give us boldness and authority to preach the Gospel in our present time.
